What does a Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management consultant do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management consultant sets up the app's product, inventory, warehouse, procurement, production and master planning features so they fit how a business really runs. The main certification is MB-330. The MB-335 expert certification was retired on June 30, 2026, and AB-330 is a new beta exam.

What the job covers

You take the way a company buys, stores, makes, plans and ships goods, and set up Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management to run it. Microsoft's MB-330 profile lists the scope: product information management, sales and procurement processes, vendor collaboration, inventory, quality management, warehouse management and its mobile app, master planning and Planning Optimization, asset management, transportation management, landed cost, and Copilot in the app.

In practice, the hardest work sits where processes meet. Get the item model group or reservation hierarchy wrong and costing, warehouse picking and planning all break later. Microsoft's profile describes this part of the job as finding and managing dependencies between processes. You do it alongside solution architects, developers, other consultants, business users and project managers.

How a functional consultant spends the week

Early in a project, most days go to workshops. You walk the warehouse floor, watch receiving and picking, and sit with buyers and planners to learn how they decide what to order. Then you write up the requirements, map each one to standard features, and flag the gaps that need a developer or a process change.

In the middle of a project, you configure. That means product templates, BOMs, inventory dimensions, warehouse locations and work templates, and planning parameters. You also build test scripts and run conference room pilots. Close to go-live, you train key users, help with data loads for items and on-hand stock, and handle the first month of issues, which are often scanner and wave problems in the warehouse.

The background that helps

The strongest supply chain consultants I have worked with came out of operations. Warehouse supervisors, buyers, production planners, inventory controllers and materials managers already know why cycle counts drift and why a planner overrides MRP. That knowledge lets you challenge a requirement instead of just writing it down.

Former Dynamics AX consultants also move into this work easily, because Supply Chain Management grew out of that product. If you come from finance, expect to learn warehouse and production in depth. Costing is the shared ground between the two. Many projects run Supply Chain Management alongside Dynamics 365 Finance, so knowing how inventory postings reach the ledger makes you more useful.

Certifications: MB-330, the retired expert and AB-330

MB-330 earns Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate. As of October 21, 2026, it weights product information management at 25 to 30 percent, inventory and asset management at 20 to 25 percent, supply chain processes at 15 to 20 percent, warehouse and transportation management at 20 to 25 percent, and master planning at 10 to 15 percent.

The Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert certification, exam MB-335, covered production control, discrete, process and lean manufacturing, engineering change and advanced planning. Microsoft retired the certification, its exam and its renewal assessments on June 30, 2026. If you earned or renewed it before then, it stays in the Active Certifications section of your transcript until it expires, then moves to Historical.

AB-330 earns Microsoft Certified: Supply Chain Management AI Consultant Associate, which is still in beta. It is built around the business process catalog, with sections for design to retire, forecast to plan, inventory to deliver, order to cash, plan to produce and source to pay. It takes 100 minutes, needs a score of 700, and beta results are not scored right away.

Pay

Dynamics 365 roles, all US adverts (p25 to p75, median 153,050)
$123,600–182,260
Functional consultant adverts, small sample (p25 to p75, median 150,000)
$105,000–175,750

USD a year, before tax. D365 Market advertised pay from US adverts that state pay, snapshot 2026-11-05. This is advertised pay, not earnings, and it skews toward states with pay transparency laws. There is no Supply Chain Management-only row, so these are the nearest Dynamics categories. The functional consultant row is a small sample of 5 adverts from 3 employers. Seniority and whether the project includes manufacturing move the figure most.

Questions people ask

Can I still take MB-335?

No. Microsoft retired the Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert certification, its MB-335 exam and its renewal assessments on June 30, 2026. Nobody can earn or renew it after that date.

I already hold the MB-335 expert certification. What happens to it?

According to Microsoft's retirement page, a certification you earned or renewed before it retired stays in the Active Certifications section of your transcript until it expires. After that, it moves to the Historical Certifications section.

Should I take MB-330 or AB-330?

MB-330 is the established associate exam, and its skills list was updated on October 21, 2026. AB-330 is a beta built around the business process catalog and AI features, with no Microsoft training yet. Most people new to the product should take MB-330 first.

How long is the MB-330 exam?

You get 100 minutes, and the exam is proctored. It may include interactive components.

Do I need to know manufacturing?

MB-330 focuses on product, inventory, warehouse, procurement and planning, so it does not require manufacturing. Many projects include production, though, and the retired expert exam was the certification that covered it. Experience on a manufacturing implementation now carries that weight.

How do I keep MB-330 current?

The certification expires every 12 months. You renew it for free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
