What does a Dynamics 365 Field Service consultant do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 Field Service consultant sets up the app that companies use to send technicians to customer sites. You configure work orders, resources, the schedule board, agreements, customer assets and the mobile app. Microsoft retired the Field Service certification on June 30, 2026.

Who buys Field Service, and why

Field Service is for organizations that send people out to fix, install or maintain things at customer locations. Microsoft's own examples are a medical device maker servicing hospital machines, a fiber utility dispatching crews to outages, an in-home health care provider, and a facilities firm maintaining heating and cooling equipment. The buyer usually wants better first-time fix rates, more jobs per technician each week, less driving, and accurate arrival times for customers.

Most clients mix service models. Break-fix work starts when a customer reports a problem. Preventive work runs from agreements that generate recurring work orders. Predictive work comes from connected devices raising alerts. Multistage jobs can link to Project Operations. Your first job on a project is working out which models the client runs and in what proportion, because that drives almost every configuration decision that follows.

What the consultant configures

The center of the app is the work order. You define incident types, which bundle the tasks, parts, labor and skills a job needs, so a work order arrives pre-filled. You set up bookable resources with skills, territories and working hours. You tune the schedule board so dispatchers can assign work by drag and drop, the scheduling assistant, or the Resource Scheduling Optimization add-on. You also set up agreements, inventory and truck stock, purchasing, returns, time tracking and billing.

Customer assets are the other big data design job. Each asset holds service history, so a technician arriving on site sees what was done last time. Get the asset structure wrong early and preventive maintenance and reporting suffer for the life of the system. Copilot in Field Service now writes work order summaries and answers questions about data, so expect clients to ask how it behaves with their records.

The mobile app and IoT

Technicians work from a mobile app for iOS, Android and Windows. It comes with the Field Service license at no extra charge and is a model-driven Power Platform app, so you customize it the same way you customize other model-driven apps. The hardest part is usually the offline profile: which tables, filters and relationships sync to the device, and how often. Technicians in basements and rural sites need it to work without signal. You may also set up push notifications, Intune device management, location tracking and geofencing.

Connected Field Service links IoT devices to the app so device readings can raise alerts and create work orders before equipment fails. Microsoft notes that the device readings chart is gone, because it relied on Azure Time Series Insights, retired on July 7, 2024. IoT projects normally pull in Azure skills, so a Field Service consultant who can talk to the Azure team is worth more on those jobs.

How Field Service joins Customer Service

Field Service belongs to what the trade calls Customer Engagement, and its most common partner is Dynamics 365 Customer Service. In the typical break-fix flow, a customer calls, an agent triages the request, decides it needs a site visit, and creates a work order. Work orders can also come from service cases. A dispatcher then schedules the job and a technician closes it on the mobile app. The renewal assessment for the retired certification included integrating Dynamics 365 Remote Assist with Field Service.

In practice many Field Service consultants also know case management, and many Customer Service consultants pick up Field Service when a client adds technicians. On a combined project, agree early where the case ends and the work order begins, and who owns customer communication at each status.

What you need

  • Field service process knowledgeYou need to understand dispatch, work order lifecycles, preventive maintenance, truck stock and service billing. Experience as a dispatcher, service manager or technician counts.
  • Dataverse and model-driven appsThe Field Service mobile app is a model-driven Power Platform app, so you configure forms, views and security the same way as in other model-driven apps.
  • Scheduling configurationClients judge the project by the schedule board. You need to set up resources, skills, territories and booking rules, and know when the Resource Scheduling Optimization add-on is worth buying.
  • Mobile and offline designYou must design the offline profile so technicians get the data they need without slow syncs.
  • Customer Service basicsMany projects start with requests in Customer Service and hand off to work orders, so case handling knowledge is expected.
  • Certification statusThe Field Service Functional Consultant Associate certification, its MB-240 exam and its renewal assessment are retired, so you cannot sit or renew it. Hands-on project experience now carries the weight for this module.

How to get there

  1. Before you startLearn the service businessUnderstand how a service organization takes a request, schedules a technician, uses parts and bills the job. Prior work in dispatch, service operations or a trade helps.
  2. First monthsBuild in a trial environmentCreate work orders, incident types, resources and agreements, then run a booking through the schedule board and close it on the mobile app.
  3. First projectsJoin a project as a junior consultantExpect to configure incident types, load resource and asset data, test the mobile app and write training material.

Questions people ask

Can I still take the Dynamics 365 Field Service certification?

No. Microsoft Learn states that the Field Service Functional Consultant Associate certification, its related exam MB-240, and its renewal assessments were retired on June 30, 2026. Since the renewal assessment is also retired, an existing holder cannot renew it.

What did the retired MB-240 exam cover?

It assessed configuring the Field Service app, managing work orders and customer assets, scheduling and dispatch, managing the mobile app, inventory and purchasing, and implementing Power Platform. That list is still a good outline of what the job needs.

Is the Field Service mobile app an extra cost?

No. Microsoft says the mobile app is included in the Field Service license at no extra charge. It runs on iOS, Android and Windows devices.

How much does a Field Service consultant earn in the US?

D365 Market's US adverts for Field Service and Customer Service roles that stated pay had a median of $176,800 a year in the November 5, 2026 snapshot. That is a small sample of 5 adverts from 4 employers, and it shows advertised pay, not actual earnings.

Do I need to know Customer Service to work on Field Service?

It helps a lot. In the common break-fix flow, a customer service agent takes the request and creates the work order, so many projects configure both apps together.

Is Connected Field Service part of every project?

No. Many clients run only reactive and preventive work. IoT-driven work comes up with equipment makers and asset-heavy clients, and those projects usually also need Azure skills.
