What does the consultant actually design?
You decide how a support request becomes a case, who owns it, and how fast it has to be closed. Microsoft's MB-230 page lists the main pieces: cases, knowledge management, queues, service-level agreements, Customer Voice surveys and routing. In practice that means running workshops with service managers, mapping their case lifecycle, and turning it into case types, entitlements, SLA timers, escalation rules and dashboards their team leads will trust.
Routing is where most of the design hours go. Unified routing works in two stages. First, classification rules and machine learning models tag each work item with things like required skills or urgency. Then assignment ranks the items and hands them to the best available representative based on skills, workload and presence. You set up the queues, the overflow rules, the operating hours and the skill model. You also build the knowledge base that representatives and Copilot both draw from.
Where do Contact Center and Copilot fit?
Microsoft describes Dynamics 365 Contact Center as a Copilot-first cloud product that brings voice, chat and digital channels to the CRM of the customer's choice. It can run embedded inside Customer Service or standalone. Projects that include it add channel work: chat widgets, voice numbers, IVR, call recording and transcription, outbound campaigns and workforce management forecasting.
Copilot work is now a normal part of the job. You configure conversation and case summaries, the Ask a question feature, and the knowledge sources Copilot draws on. You may also design AI agents in Copilot Studio that handle self-service before a human picks up. Expect clients to ask you what to automate and what to keep with people. That call involves compliance and legal teams as much as IT.
Who hires Customer Service consultants?
The trade groups Customer Service with Sales, Field Service and Customer Insights under the name Customer Engagement, and most job adverts use that label. Microsoft partners hire consultants to deliver implementations for clients. End-user companies that run large service desks or contact centers hire in-house consultants and analysts to own the platform after go-live. Partner work gives you more projects in less time. End-user work goes deeper on one operation.
Day to day you work with solution architects and developers, as the MB-230 page states, and with administrators who manage the environment. On Contact Center projects you also sit with contact center managers, supervisors and telephony teams. A background as a service desk lead or contact center analyst counts in your favor, because you already know what an SLA breach costs.
MB-230 or AB-250?
MB-230 earns the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Customer Service Functional Consultant Associate. The exam covers three areas: managing cases, configuring the representative experience and routing, and extending Customer Service. Microsoft updated the English exam on March 11, 2026. You keep the certification by passing a free online renewal assessment every 12 months, and you can take it once you are within six months of expiry.
AB-250 earns the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer Associate. Channels carry the most weight, at 30 to 35 percent. The rest covers deployment, AI agents, work distribution, the representative experience and analytics. Microsoft expects experience with contact center as a service, plus Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Power BI, Teams and Microsoft Foundry. Take MB-230 first unless your projects are mostly voice and chat.
Pay
USD a year, before tax. Source: D365 Market advertised pay from US adverts that state pay, snapshot 2026-11-05. These figures are advertised pay, not earnings, and they lean toward states with pay transparency laws. The first two rows are small samples (medians $176,800 and $172,550), so treat them as rough. Seniority and contact center scope move the figure most. Refer to the Field Service & Customer Service salary guide for figures from live adverts.

Questions people ask
Is MB-230 still a live exam?
Yes. Microsoft Learn lists the Customer Service Functional Consultant Associate certification with MB-230 as its exam, scheduled through Pearson VUE. Microsoft updated the English exam on March 11, 2026.
What should I know about sitting MB-230 and AB-250?
Both are proctored. You need a score of 700 or higher to pass. If you fail, you can retake 24 hours after the first attempt.
What is the difference between Customer Service and Contact Center?
Customer Service is the case management app: cases, SLAs, queues and knowledge. Dynamics 365 Contact Center adds voice, chat and digital channels with AI agents, and it can run embedded in Customer Service or standalone with another CRM. Unified routing serves both.
Do I need to code?
No. The role is functional and works mainly through configuration. MB-230 does include extending Customer Service, and AB-250 touches SDKs and JavaScript APIs, so you should be able to read a technical design and brief a developer.
How much does a Customer Service consultant earn in the US?
US adverts on D365 Market for Field Service and Customer Service roles showed a median of $176,800 a year in the November 5, 2026 snapshot. That comes from only 5 adverts, so treat it as a rough guide. It is advertised pay, not earnings.
Does the MB-230 certification expire?
Yes. It renews every 12 months. You renew at no cost by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn once you are within six months of expiry.
