What does a Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement consultant do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement consultant sets up Microsoft's customer-facing apps (Sales, Customer Service, Field Service and Customer Insights) on Dataverse to fit how a business sells and serves. US adverts on D365 Market put the median at $172,550 a year, from a small sample.

What does Customer Engagement cover?

Customer Engagement is the trade's name for the Dynamics 365 apps that deal with customers: Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Dynamics 365 Field Service and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights. Microsoft's own retired fundamentals certification called these the customer engagement apps for Dynamics 365. They all store data in Microsoft Dataverse, so accounts, contacts and activities are shared across them. A Field Service work order and a Sales opportunity can point at the same customer record without any integration work.

The role grew out of Dynamics CRM, and job adverts still use the CRM name. IT Jobs Watch tracks Dynamics CRM as its own skill term in UK adverts. If you see CRM, CE or Customer Engagement in a job title, expect the same family of apps. Most consultants go deep on one or two apps, usually Sales or Customer Service, and keep working knowledge of the rest.

What does the work look like day to day?

Microsoft describes the functional consultant as the person who runs discovery, captures requirements, works with subject matter experts and configures the apps. In practice that means workshops with sales managers or service leads, then building what you agreed. On a Customer Service project you set up cases, queues, routing rules, service-level agreements and knowledge articles. On a Sales project you configure leads, opportunities, quotes and forecasting, and map the lead-to-cash process.

You build with standard features first: forms, views, business rules, model-driven apps and Power Automate cloud flows. When a requirement needs code, you write the specification and hand it to a developer. You also test, train key users and support go-live. More of the work now involves Copilot and agents. Microsoft's newer Sales and contact center certifications are built around configuring and monitoring AI agents inside the apps.

How does it relate to Power Platform?

The CE apps are model-driven Power Apps on Dataverse. A CE consultant is therefore partly a Power Platform consultant. Microsoft's Sales AI Consultant certification page recommends intermediate Power Platform configuration training before the exam and expects you to know how to build and extend model-driven apps and Power Automate flows. The Contact Center AI Engineer page expects experience with Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Power BI and Teams.

The difference is scope. A Power Platform consultant may build apps that have nothing to do with sales or service. A CE consultant brings knowledge of the business process: how a sales pipeline is run, what an SLA means for a support team, how dispatchers schedule technicians. That process knowledge is what clients pay for.

Who hires CE consultants?

Microsoft partners hire most CE consultants. They run implementations for several clients at once, so you see many projects quickly. End users hire too: companies that run Dynamics 365 Sales or Customer Service in-house need people to keep extending it after go-live. Partner demand ties to Microsoft's partner program. Its Service specialization now counts the Contact Center AI Engineer certification where it used to count Field Service, so partners push staff toward the newer exams.

Pay is high in US adverts, but the sample is thin. Nine adverts with stated pay give a median of $172,550. In the UK, IT Jobs Watch shows a Dynamics CRM permanent median of £62,500 and a contract median of £500 a day for the six months to November 5, 2026. Both are advertised figures.

Questions people ask

Is Customer Engagement the same as Dynamics CRM?

Yes, in practice. Customer Engagement is the trade's name for the Dynamics 365 customer apps that grew out of Dynamics CRM. Adverts use CRM, CE and Customer Engagement for the same family of apps.

Which certification should a CE consultant take first?

Take MB-230 for Customer Service work or AB-210 for Sales work. If you work on contact center projects, add AB-250. There is no longer a Field Service exam, because MB-240 retired on June 30, 2026.

Do I need to code?

No. Functional CE consultants configure the apps using standard features, model-driven apps and Power Automate flows. Microsoft's exam pages expect you to build and extend model-driven apps, but code goes to developers.

What happens to my retired Field Service certification?

Microsoft says a retired certification you already earned stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript. You cannot renew it after retirement.

How much does a CE consultant earn in the US?

D365 Market's US adverts with stated pay show a median of $172,550 a year, with the middle half between $125,000 and $182,000. That comes from only 9 adverts, so treat it as a rough guide. It is advertised pay, not earnings.

How often do I renew a CE certification?

Microsoft's associate certifications renew every 12 months. You become eligible to renew when the certification is within six months of expiring, and you renew by passing an online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn.
