What does a Power Platform consultant do?

Short answer

A Power Platform consultant gathers business requirements and turns them into Dataverse data models, Power Apps, Power Automate flows, Power Pages sites and Copilot Studio agents. The work runs alongside Dynamics 365 or on its own. Microsoft retired the functional consultant certification on August 31, 2026.

What does a Power Platform consultant build?

Most of the work starts with Dataverse. You design the tables, columns, relationships and security roles, and then build the apps on top. Model-driven apps work well for structured case or record work. Canvas apps fit task screens and mobile use. Power Automate cloud flows handle approvals, notifications and system-to-system steps. Power Pages gives customers or suppliers a secure website over the same data. Power BI reports sit on top so managers can see what is happening.

Copilot Studio is now part of the daily job. Clients want agents that answer staff questions from their own knowledge sources, or that take actions through connectors and flows. Microsoft's Intelligent Applications Builder certification now describes the role this way: you build Dataverse models, model-driven and canvas apps, and cloud flows, and you add agents and Copilot features to apps and Power Pages sites. Expect to write Power Fx formulas every week.

Beside Dynamics 365 or on its own

The Dynamics 365 Sales, Customer Service and Field Service apps run on Dataverse. On a Customer Engagement project, the Power Platform consultant usually extends the standard apps. That means a canvas app for field staff, a flow that syncs with an ERP system, or a Power Pages portal where customers log cases. You have to know where standard Dynamics 365 functions end so you avoid rebuilding something the client already licenses.

Plenty of projects have no Dynamics 365 at all. A council, bank or manufacturer might use Power Apps to replace spreadsheets and Access databases, or to digitize a paper process. On these jobs you often own the full design, from discovery workshops to go-live training. On a large Dynamics program you are more likely to build to a design set by a solution architect.

Governance is part of the job

Low-code tools spread quickly, and IT departments worry about apps nobody supports and data leaking through connectors. Senior consultants set up the environment strategy: which environments exist, who can build where, and how solutions move from development to test to production through pipelines. Microsoft groups many of these controls under Managed Environments, including data policies, sharing limits, usage insights, solution checker and pipelines.

There is a live deadline here. Microsoft has deprecated unmanaged developer environments. To keep an existing developer environment, it has to be switched to a Managed Environment before December 15, 2026. Clients will ask you to plan this kind of change, so learn the admin center along with the maker tools.

What happened to the functional consultant certification?

Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate (exam PL-200) retired on August 31, 2026, together with its exam and renewal assessments. Nobody can earn or renew it after that date. It no longer appears in the list of associate certifications that count toward the AB-100 Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert.

Microsoft did not name one direct replacement on the pages we read. The closest match in scope is AB-410, the Intelligent Applications Builder Associate. It covers Dataverse modeling, Power Apps, cloud flows, Power Pages and Copilot features. AB-620, the AI Agent Builder Associate, covers advanced Copilot Studio agents. For the technical side, the Power Platform Developer Associate moved from exam PL-400 to AB-400. PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026, and the last PL-400 sittings were on October 30, 2026.

Questions people ask

Can I still take PL-200?

No. Microsoft retired the Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate certification, its exam and its renewal assessments on August 31, 2026. Nobody can earn or renew it after that date.

Which certification should a Power Platform consultant take now?

AB-410, the Intelligent Applications Builder Associate, is the closest fit for functional Power Platform work. It covers Dataverse models, model-driven and canvas apps, cloud flows, Power Pages and Copilot features.

Is PL-400 still the developer exam?

No. The Power Platform Developer Associate now uses exam AB-400. PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026, and the last PL-400 sittings were on October 30, 2026. The AB-100 page still lists the certification under the PL-400 label.

Do I need Dynamics 365 experience?

Not always. Many Power Platform projects stand alone. Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement apps run on Dataverse, though, so that experience opens more partner roles and larger projects.

How much do Power Platform consultants earn in the UK?

IT Jobs Watch adverts that cite the Power Platform Consultant title show a median of £65,000 a year in the 6 months to 5 November 2026. Contract adverts citing the Power Platform skill show a median of £500 a day. Both figures are advertised rates.
