What the job involves day to day
Most of your work starts where configuration runs out. A model-driven app needs a form that validates three related tables before save, so you write a Dataverse plug-in in C# and register it on the right stage of the event pipeline. A canvas app needs a calendar or map control that does not exist, so you build a Power Apps component framework (PCF) code component in TypeScript. A flow has to call a line-of-business API, so you build a custom connector from its OpenAPI definition and handle the authentication.
Microsoft's AB-400 study guide is a good map of the job. The largest block, at 35 to 40 percent, is extending the platform: plug-ins, custom APIs, the Dataverse Web API and Organization service, Azure Functions for long-running work, and complex Power Automate expressions. Extending the user experience is 25 to 30 percent and covers client scripting with the Client API, PCF components, and Power Apps code apps. Designing and deploying solutions takes 15 to 20 percent, and integrations take 10 to 15 percent.
Power Fx, ALM and Copilot Studio agents
You still write a lot of Power Fx. Canvas app formulas, command bar buttons in model-driven apps and many validation rules use it, and the study guide expects you to configure commands with both Power Fx and JavaScript. The skill is knowing which layer each piece of logic belongs in: a business rule, a client script, a plug-in, a flow, or a cloud service.
Application lifecycle management is part of your job, not something the admin does for you. You manage solution layers, dependencies and environment variables, and you move work between environments. Pipelines in Power Platform give makers a simple deploy button, and Microsoft notes that professional developers can extend those pipelines and run them from the Power Platform CLI. On larger projects you also build CI/CD with Power Platform Build Tools.
Agents are now in scope. The AB-400 study guide asks you to decide when to build an agent in Copilot Studio and when to use Microsoft Foundry, to wire Copilot Studio agents into code apps, and to expose Dataverse to custom agents through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
How a developer differs from a low-code maker
A maker builds canvas apps, model-driven apps and cloud flows in the designers, using Power Fx and out-of-the-box features. Many good makers never open Visual Studio Code. A developer works in the same platform but owns the extension points: compiled plug-ins, TypeScript components, the Web API, Azure services, the CLI and source control. Microsoft lists JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Python, HTML, YAML, RESTful APIs and Azure as expected experience for AB-400.
The other difference is judgment. One of the first skills in the study guide is deciding whether a requirement can be met without code at all. On projects I have run, the developer who says no to unnecessary code saves more money than the one who writes the most. Code you add is code someone has to support through every release wave.
Where the developer certification stands now
The certification is still called Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate. Its exam changed. The certification page says PL-400 is transitioning to AB-400, Extending Microsoft Power Platform Solutions with Code and AI. PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026, and candidates who registered by then could sit it until October 30, 2026. AB-400 opened on October 16, 2026, and its exam page lists no retirement date.
Older labels are still around. The AB-100 architect page still lists this prerequisite as PL-400, and a resource link on the certification page is labeled as the PL-400 study guide but opens the AB-400 guide. You need a score of 700 to pass. Like other associate certifications, it expires each year, and you renew it with a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Pay

What you need
- Development languagesMicrosoft expects experience with JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, Power Fx, C#, Python, HTML and YAML. Plug-ins are written in C#, and PCF components in TypeScript.
- Dataverse depthYou need to know the event execution pipeline, the Web API and Organization service, custom APIs, alternate keys and API limit retry handling.
- Azure and integrationExpect Azure Functions, OAuth, managed identities, webhooks, Azure Service Bus and Event Hub, and custom connectors built from OpenAPI definitions.
- ALM toolingYou should be able to use the Power Platform CLI, solution layers, environment variables, Power Platform Pipelines and Build Tools for CI/CD.
- Agent toolsAB-400 covers Copilot Studio agents, Microsoft Foundry agents and MCP servers that expose Power Platform data.
- CertificationPower Platform Developer Associate, earned by passing AB-400 with a score of 700 or more. Renewal is every 12 months through a free online assessment.
How to get there
- Months 0 to 6Learn the platform as a makerBuild canvas apps, model-driven apps and flows with Power Fx so you know what the platform does without code.
- Months 6 to 12Add front-end and Dataverse codeWrite client scripts against the Client API and build your first PCF components in TypeScript.
- Year 1 to 2Take on server-side workWrite and register C# plug-ins and custom APIs, build custom connectors, and use the Web API.
- Year 1 to 2Pass AB-400Earn Power Platform Developer Associate once you have hands-on plug-in, PCF and integration work behind you.
- Year 2 to 4Own ALM and integrationsRun pipelines, CI/CD and Azure integrations for a project, and design agent integrations with Copilot Studio.
- Year 4 and onMove to lead or architectLead a development team or move toward solution architecture, where AB-100 lists this certification as one of its prerequisites.

Questions people ask
Is PL-400 still available?
No. Registration for PL-400 closed on October 16, 2026, and the last sittings were on October 30, 2026. The Power Platform Developer Associate certification now requires exam AB-400.
Do I need to be a full software developer to do this job?
You need real coding skills. Microsoft lists TypeScript, JavaScript, C#, Python, REST APIs and Azure as expected experience for AB-400. Someone who only uses the designers and Power Fx is working as a maker, which is a different role.
What does a Power Platform developer earn in the US?
US adverts on D365 Market for Power Platform roles that stated pay had a median of $126,800 a year, with the middle half between $105,000 and $161,295 (71 adverts, snapshot November 5, 2026). These are advertised figures, not earnings, and they skew toward states with pay transparency laws.
What about UK pay?
IT Jobs Watch recorded a median of £55,000 a year for permanent UK adverts titled Power Platform Developer in the six months to November 5, 2026, with the middle half between £50,000 and £65,000. For contracts with that title, IT Jobs Watch recorded a median of £500 a day over the same six months (87 rates quoted). Both are advertised rates.
How is a Power Platform developer different from a Dynamics 365 developer?
Customer Engagement apps such as Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service run on Dataverse, so plug-ins, PCF and client scripting carry over directly. Finance and Operations apps and Business Central use different development stacks and different exams, MB-500 and MB-820.
Does the certification expire?
Yes. Associate certifications expire every 12 months. You renew by passing a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, and you don't have to sit the full exam again.
