How do you become a Dynamics 365 developer?

Short answer

Choose a stack first. Dataverse and Power Platform suits C# and JavaScript developers. X++ covers Finance and Operations apps, and AL covers Business Central. Build in a sandbox, publish a small portfolio, then take the exam for your stack: AB-400 (it replaced PL-400), MB-500 or MB-820.

Which path fits your background?

Dynamics 365 development is really three separate jobs. Customer Engagement apps run on Dataverse, so the work is C# plug-ins, JavaScript on forms, TypeScript controls and Web API integrations. Finance and Operations apps are extended in X++. Business Central is extended in AL. Pick based on the code you already write and the kind of business you want to work in. Many people try to learn all three at once and end up employable in none.

If you come from C# or JavaScript web work, Dataverse is the shortest step. Microsoft's Power Platform Developer Associate page lists the background it expects: JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, C#, HTML, RESTful Web APIs, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code and Azure. A SQL and reporting background suits ERP work better. X++ has SQL-like data statements built into the language, and Business Central projects often hire developers who understand ledgers and posting.

Tools and sandbox options

Business Central is the easiest stack to try on your own. Microsoft says you need three things: a Business Central tenant, Visual Studio Code and the AL Language extension. Sign up for an online sandbox, then run the AL Go command from Visual Studio Code. It creates a HelloWorld project, and Ctrl+F5 deploys it to your sandbox. Microsoft also documents a container-based sandbox. Starting with the 2026 release wave 2, the AL extension installs its own .NET 10.0 runtime through the .NET Install Tool.

For Dataverse, the free Power Apps Developer Plan used to be the easy route. It needs a work or school account, caps the database at 2 GB and flow runs at 750 a month, and disables environments after 30 days of inactivity. From November 15, 2026, signing up no longer creates a developer environment. Existing unmanaged developer environments are suspended from December 15, 2026 and deleted from January 15, 2027. Keeping one requires an admin with the right licensing to turn on Managed Environments, which the plan doesn't include. Otherwise, ask your admin for a managed developer environment.

X++ is the hardest stack to practice on your own. Microsoft now puts its tutorial on writing, deploying and debugging X++ in the Power Platform developer docs, under the unified developer experience. In practice, most people get steady X++ time through an employer or a partner project. Plan for that before you commit to this path.

Which certification to take

Power Platform Developer Associate now requires exam AB-400, Extending Microsoft Power Platform Solutions with Code and AI. Microsoft's page says PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026, and candidates who had already registered could sit PL-400 through October 30, 2026. AB-400 covers building Power Platform solutions (including technical architecture design), extending the user experience, extending the platform and developing integrations, with generative AI and agents throughout. The AB-400 exam page lists a preparation course, Extend Microsoft Power Platform solutions with code and AI, and an AB-400 study guide.

MB-500 leads to Dynamics 365: Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate. MB-820 leads to Dynamics 365 Business Central Developer Associate. Role-based certifications expire unless you renew them, and renewal is free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Register with a personal Microsoft account. If you register with a work account, Microsoft warns that your exam records are lost when you leave that employer.

What goes in a first portfolio?

Hiring managers want to see code running against the real platform. For Dataverse, build a small solution with a custom table, a C# plug-in, form JavaScript, and a flow or custom connector that calls an outside API. Export it as a solution and put the source in a public repository. For Business Central, publish an AL extension that adds a table, a page and an event subscriber, with tests included. In each repo, write a short README covering the business problem, your design choices and how to deploy it. A certification helps you get past screening. A repo you can talk through line by line is what gets you hired.

What you need

  • A base languageC# and JavaScript for Dataverse. Any object-oriented language plus SQL makes X++ and AL easier to pick up.
  • A sandboxA Business Central online sandbox, or a managed developer environment for Dataverse. From November 15, 2026, the Power Apps Developer Plan no longer creates an environment.
  • Developer toolsVisual Studio Code with the AL Language extension for Business Central. For Dataverse, Power Platform CLI, Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.
  • Business process knowledgeLearn the processes your code touches, such as sales, service, or finance posting. Without them, you can't turn a requirement into a design.
  • ALM habitsMicrosoft lists ALM practices for Power Platform in the Developer Associate profile, along with authentication and security. Employers expect source control and solution deployment.
  • Optional certificationAB-400, MB-500 or MB-820, depending on your stack.

How to get there

  1. Week 1Pick one stackDataverse if you know C# or JavaScript. AL or X++ if you want ERP work and know SQL.
  2. Weeks 1-2Set up a sandboxBusiness Central online sandbox with VS Code and AL, or a managed developer environment for Dataverse. From November 15, 2026, the Power Apps Developer Plan no longer creates an environment, so ask an admin for a managed developer environment (for example through environment routing).
  3. Months 1-3Learn the platform modelTables, security, events and the deployment model before you write custom code.
  4. Months 2-4Build a portfolio projectA public repo with a plug-in or extension, tests and a clear README.
  5. Months 3-6Take the examAB-400 for Power Platform, MB-500 for Finance and Operations, MB-820 for Business Central.
  6. Months 4-12Land a first roleMicrosoft partners often hire juniors and train them on live projects. Renew your certification each cycle.

Questions people ask

Is PL-400 still available?

No. Microsoft's Power Platform Developer Associate page says PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026, and the last PL-400 sittings were on October 30, 2026. The certification now requires AB-400.

Can I practice Dataverse development for free?

Only until November 15, 2026. After that date, signing up for the Power Apps Developer Plan no longer creates a developer environment. Existing unmanaged developer environments are suspended from December 15, 2026 and deleted from January 15, 2027. To keep one, an admin with the right licensing must turn on Managed Environments, which the Developer Plan doesn't include. Otherwise, ask your admin for a managed developer environment, for example through environment routing.

What do I need to start writing AL for Business Central?

Microsoft lists a Business Central tenant, Visual Studio Code and the AL Language extension. Sign up for a sandbox, then run the AL Go command to generate a HelloWorld project, and press Ctrl+F5 to deploy it.

Should a C# developer learn X++ or Dataverse?

For most C# developers, Dataverse is the faster move. Plug-ins are written in C#, and the integration work uses REST Web APIs. X++ makes sense if you want Finance and Operations work and can get time on a real environment through an employer or partner.

Do I need a certification to get hired?

No law requires one. It does help you get past partner screening. Hiring managers give more weight to a working repo and to project experience you can explain.

What does a Dynamics 365 developer earn in the UK?

IT Jobs Watch adverts using the Dynamics 365 Developer title, for the six months to November 5, 2026, show a median permanent salary of £62,500 and a median contract rate of £463 a day. These are advertised figures, not earnings.
