What does a Dynamics 365 developer do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 developer extends Microsoft's business apps where configuration stops. On Finance and Operations that means X++ business logic, reports and APIs. On Dataverse apps it means C# plug-ins, JavaScript, TypeScript and Power Platform components. US adverts on D365 Market state a median of $125,000.

What the job actually is

Dynamics 365 is configured first and coded second. Functional consultants set up the system with its own settings. You get the work that settings cannot do: business rules the product does not ship with, integrations to other systems, custom screens, reports, and data loads. On a partner project you build to a design the consultants and architect agreed with the client. At an end user you also maintain that code through every Microsoft update, which is where most of the long-term effort goes.

There are really two developer worlds, plus a third, smaller one. Finance and Operations (Finance, Supply Chain Management and related apps) runs on X++. The Customer Engagement apps (Sales, Customer Service, Field Service) sit on Dataverse, the same platform as Power Apps, so their developers work in C#, JavaScript and TypeScript. Business Central has its own language, AL, and its own developer community. Most people specialize in one world, and moving between them takes real retraining.

Finance and Operations: X++ and extensions

Microsoft's certification page for this role lists the work plainly. You write business logic in X++, create and change reports and workspaces, customize the UI, expose endpoints and APIs for Power Platform and outside systems, test, monitor performance, handle data, and manage the build through application lifecycle management. You also write technical designs and implement security requirements.

The rule that shapes everything is that you extend the standard code and leave it intact, so Microsoft's updates can land without breaking your work. The toolset on that same page is Visual Studio, Azure DevOps with TFVC or Git, Lifecycle Services, the Power Platform admin center, Postman, SQL Server Management Studio, and SSRS or Power BI for reports. Expect deep time in the data model. Finance and Operations rewards people who know the tables and posting logic as well as the code.

Dataverse apps: plug-ins, JavaScript and PCF

On Sales, Customer Service and Field Service you are working on Dataverse. Server-side logic goes into C# plug-ins that fire on record events. Form behavior goes into JavaScript or TypeScript web resources. Custom controls are built with the Power Apps component framework (PCF). Integrations use the REST Web API and Azure services. Microsoft's Power Platform developer certification expects experience with JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, C#, HTML, RESTful Web APIs, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code and Azure.

Microsoft also expects you to use the Power Platform CLI as part of the developer workflow, and to know authentication, security and ALM for the platform. The newer AB-400 exam adds Power Fx, Python, YAML, Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, and weights the platform extension work highest at 35 to 40 percent. That tells you where Microsoft sees this job heading: code plus agents.

What a sprint looks like, and where the demand is

Most projects run two-week sprints out of Azure DevOps. You pick up user stories the business analyst and functional consultant wrote, ask questions in refinement, write a short technical design for anything large, build in your own development environment, and check in to source control. Code then moves through a build pipeline to test, where testers and key users try it. Defects come back to you. Near go-live, the work shifts to data migration scripts, integration fixes and performance.

Demand is real in both worlds. D365 Market had 35 US developer adverts with stated pay in its 2026-11-05 snapshot. In the UK, IT Jobs Watch counted 170 permanent salaries and 99 contract rates for the Dynamics 365 Developer title in the six months to 5 November 2026, and 197 salaries for Power Platform Developer. Power Platform as a skill appeared in more than twice as many UK permanent salary adverts as Dynamics 365 (2,489 against 1,151), so Dataverse skills travel furthest.

What you need

  • A programming backgroundFor Dataverse work Microsoft lists JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, C#, HTML, REST Web APIs and Azure. Finance and Operations work needs X++ and solid SQL.
  • Knowledge of the platform's data modelThe F&O developer certification page asks for deep knowledge of the underlying framework, data structures and objects. Most of your debugging time goes here.
  • ALM and source controlBoth certifications expect application lifecycle management. In practice that means Azure DevOps, Git or TFVC, and build pipelines.
  • MB-500 for Finance and OperationsIt earns the Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate certification. The proctored exam gives you 100 minutes, and the certification renews every 12 months.
  • AB-400 for Power Platform and DataverseIt earns the Power Platform Developer Associate certification. AB-400 replaced PL-400, and Microsoft's page lists no retirement date for it.
  • Free yearly renewalMicrosoft role-based certifications expire unless renewed. You renew at no cost by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

  2. Months 0-6Pick one platformChoose Finance and Operations (X++) or Dataverse (plug-ins, PCF). Study toward MB-500 or AB-400 to give your learning a structure.
  3. Year 1-2Join a project teamJunior roles at Microsoft partners build small extensions, fix defects and write data scripts under a senior developer.
  4. Year 1-2CertifyTake MB-500 or AB-400 once you have real build time behind you. Renew each year online at no cost.

Questions people ask

Is X++ or Dataverse development the better bet?

Dataverse skills overlap with Power Platform, which appears in more UK adverts than Dynamics 365 itself, so they travel further. Finance and Operations developers are fewer, and the work is tied to finance and supply chain processes. Pick the one whose business side you are willing to learn properly.

What happened to the PL-400 exam?

Microsoft moved the Power Platform Developer Associate certification to exam AB-400. Registration for PL-400 closed on October 16, 2026, and people who registered by then could take it through October 30, 2026. AB-400 is now the required exam.

What does the MB-500 exam involve?

MB-500 earns the Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate certification. It is a proctored exam with 100 minutes to complete, and it can include interactive components. The certification renews every 12 months.

Do I need a computer science degree?

Microsoft's certification pages set no degree requirement. What employers check is whether you can write the languages listed and work within source control and ALM practices. Many developers come from general .NET or web development.

What do UK contract developers charge?

IT Jobs Watch shows a median advertised rate of £463 a day for the Dynamics 365 Developer title in the six months to 5 November 2026, from 99 rates. The middle half ran from £413 to £536. Power Platform Developer contracts had a median of £500.

How are AI agents changing the job?

AB-400 now covers agentic AI in solution logic, Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, and both developer certification pages name Copilot or AI tools. Expect to build agent integrations and to use AI assistants while coding.
