What each one owns on a project
The functional consultant owns the fit between the business and the standard product. They run requirement workshops, map processes, set up the system through configuration, write the functional design, script test cases and train users. Microsoft's description of the Finance functional consultant puts it as analyzing business requirements and turning them into working processes during implementation and ongoing support. If a client asks how a vendor invoice gets approved, the functional consultant answers it.
The technical consultant owns everything that needs code or plumbing. In finance and operations apps that means X++ business logic, reports, UI changes, APIs for Power Platform and outside systems, security, performance and application lifecycle management through Azure DevOps. In Customer Engagement and Power Platform it means plugins, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Web API integrations and Power Fx. Technical people also write the technical design and handle data migration and deployments between environments.
A normal week for each
A functional consultant's week is mostly people. Expect two or three client workshops, a few hours configuring a sandbox, writing or revising a functional design document, triaging defects from user acceptance testing and preparing training material. You spend a lot of time asking why a process works the way it does and pushing back on requests that would need custom code when a standard feature already fits.
A technical consultant's week is mostly in tools: Visual Studio, Azure DevOps, Postman, SQL Server Management Studio and the Power Platform admin center are all named on Microsoft's developer certification pages. You estimate gaps the functional team has logged, build and unit test, review pull requests, fix integration failures and move code through test and production. You still join some workshops, usually when a gap needs a quick feasibility call.
How they work together
The handoff point is the gap. The functional consultant proves a requirement cannot be met by configuration and writes it up as a functional design. The technical consultant turns that into a technical design, builds it and hands it back for functional testing. Microsoft's MB-230 page makes the same point for Customer Service: the functional consultant designs processes together with solution architects and developers. Projects go wrong when either side skips the other. Functional people who promise custom features without asking a developer create budget overruns. Developers who build without a clear spec build the wrong thing.
Pay, how to choose, and hybrid roles
Pay overlaps heavily. On D365 Market's US adverts, functional consultant roles posted a $150,000 median, but that comes from only 5 adverts at 3 employers. Developer roles posted $125,000 across 35 adverts. In the UK, IT Jobs Watch shows a £69,999 permanent median for Dynamics 365 Consultant titles and £62,500 for Developer titles, with contract medians of £550 and £463 a day.
Choose functional if you come from finance, operations, sales or service and enjoy explaining things to people. Choose technical if you already code and prefer solving problems at a keyboard. Hybrid techno-functional roles are common on smaller projects and in Business Central and Power Platform work, where one person configures, writes light code and supports users. Both tracks lead toward solution architect.

What you need
- Functional: process knowledgeYou need real domain knowledge in the module you configure. Microsoft expects Finance functional candidates to understand accounting principles and financial operations.
- Functional: certificationTake the associate exam for your app, such as MB-310 for Finance, MB-230 for Customer Service or MB-800 for Business Central. Each one is 100 minutes and proctored.
- Technical: languagesFinance and operations developers write X++. Customer Engagement and Power Platform developers work in JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, JSON and RESTful Web APIs.
- Technical: certificationMB-500 covers finance and operations development. The Power Platform Developer Associate now needs AB-400, because PL-400 registration closed on October 16, 2026.
- Technical: ALM toolsExpect to use Visual Studio, Azure DevOps with Git or TFVC, and the Power Platform admin center to manage builds and deployments.
- Both: annual renewalAssociate certifications expire after 12 months. You renew for free by passing a short, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six-month window.
How to get there
- Month 0Pick a side and a productDecide whether you want functional or technical work, then pick one product family, such as finance and operations apps, Customer Engagement, Business Central or Power Platform.
- Months 1-6Pass the matching associate examFunctional: MB-310, MB-330, MB-230 or MB-800. Technical: MB-500, MB-820 or AB-400.
- Year 1-2Join a project teamStart as a junior consultant or developer at a Microsoft partner or an in-house team, working under a lead.
- Year 2-4Own a workstreamFunctional people run a module end to end. Technical people own an integration or the deployment pipeline.
- Year 3-5Pick up the other sideLearn enough of the other discipline to work as a techno-functional consultant or to lead mixed teams.
- Year 5+Move toward architectureSenior people from either track move into lead or solution architect roles and design the whole solution.

Questions people ask
Does a functional Dynamics 365 consultant need to code?
No. Functional consultants work through configuration, process design, testing and training. Knowing enough about data structures and integrations to talk to developers makes you far more useful, though.
Which pays more, functional or technical?
The sources overlap too much to pick a clear winner. In US adverts on D365 Market, functional consultant roles had a $150,000 median from a small sample of 5 adverts, against $125,000 for developers. In the UK, IT Jobs Watch shows Dynamics 365 Consultant titles slightly ahead of Developer titles for both permanent salaries and contract day rates.
What is a techno-functional consultant?
A techno-functional consultant does both jobs: configures the system, gathers requirements and writes some code or Power Platform logic. The role is common on smaller projects, in Business Central and in Power Platform work.
Which certification fits each role?
Functional consultants take app-specific associate exams such as MB-310 for Finance or MB-230 for Customer Service. Technical consultants take MB-500 for finance and operations apps or AB-400 for the Power Platform Developer Associate.
Can I switch from functional to technical later?
Yes. Plenty of people switch in both directions. Functional consultants who learn Power Platform or X++ often move into techno-functional roles, and developers who spend time in workshops often move into functional or architect work.
