How do you become a Dynamics 365 consultant?

Short answer

Pick one module that matches the work you already do, learn it through free Microsoft Learn modules and a 30-day trial, then pass that module's associate exam (MB-310, MB-800, MB-230 or AB-210). Then apply to Microsoft partners for junior consultant roles.

Start from the job you already have

The fastest route in is to sell what you already know. Accountants and finance staff fit Dynamics 365 Finance. The Finance Functional Consultant Associate page expects a foundational understanding of accounting principles, and it lists general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting and fixed assets among the feature sets. People from small and midsize companies, or from bookkeeping, often fit Business Central, which covers financial management, sales, purchasing, inventory and fixed assets.

Support and contact center staff fit Dynamics 365 Customer Service. The MB-230 exam expects solid applied knowledge of cases, queues, service-level agreements, knowledge management and routing, which is work you may already do every day. Sales operations people and CRM administrators fit Dynamics 365 Sales. IT staff who build model-driven apps or Power Automate flows also have a head start there, because the Sales AI Consultant Associate page asks for that knowledge.

Learn for free, then get hands on

Each certification page on Microsoft Learn links to a study guide and free self-paced training. Microsoft also offers free practice assessments, and you can take them as many times as you like. Each one gives the answer, the reasoning and a link for further reading. Take one early to find your gaps, then again before you book the exam.

Reading alone will not get you hired. Open a trial and set things up yourself. Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service each offer a 30-day free trial with sample data. The Sales trial asks for a Microsoft work account, and you can create one through a Microsoft 365 trial. Customer Service accepts a personal email address, but then some trial features are not available. Build a few cases, queues or a sales pipeline end to end, and take notes you can talk through at an interview.

Pick a current certification

Microsoft rebuilt its catalog during 2026, and several older credentials have retired, so check that the exam you study for is still live. These functional associate exams are current: MB-310 for Finance, MB-330 for Supply Chain Management, MB-800 for Business Central, MB-230 for Customer Service and AB-210 for Sales. AB-210 was in beta when its page was read. MB-310 gives you 100 minutes, and the exam is proctored. You need a score of 700 to pass. If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours.

Book through Pearson VUE with a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft warns that if you book with a work account, your exam records are lost when you leave that employer. Associate certifications expire after a year. To keep yours, pass a free, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn during the six months before it expires.

Getting the first partner job

Most people get their first consulting role at a Microsoft partner, the firms that run implementations for clients. Partners hire juniors who already understand the business process, because they can teach the configuration faster than they can teach accounting or service operations. Your pitch is your past job, the certification and the trial work you can show. Another route is an internal move. If your current employer runs Dynamics 365, volunteer for testing, key user or data cleanup work on the next project. That counts as real implementation experience on a CV.

Questions people ask

Do I need a certification to work as a Dynamics 365 consultant?

No law requires one. Employers look for Microsoft certifications, which Microsoft runs and publishes on Microsoft Learn.

Which exam should a career changer take first?

Take the associate exam for the module closest to your current job. That means MB-310 for Finance, MB-800 for Business Central, MB-230 for Customer Service or AB-210 for Sales. Several older Dynamics 365 certifications retired in 2026, so confirm the exam is live before you study.

Is the training free?

Self-paced Microsoft Learn modules and the practice assessments cost nothing, and you can repeat the practice assessments as often as you like. The proctored exam has a fee, and its price depends on the country where you take it.

What happens if my certification expires?

Associate certifications last a year. You can renew for free with an online assessment during the six months before the expiry date. If you miss that window, you have to pass the full exam again.

Can I try Dynamics 365 without an employer?

Yes. Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service each offer a 30-day free trial with sample data. The Sales trial needs a Microsoft work account, which you can create through a Microsoft 365 trial.
