The first assignment

Ask what you would work on in the first three months. Request the product, project stage, team size, and responsibility you would own.

Ask what a good result would look like. Check whether the role covers implementation, support, product work, or a mix.

Learning and review

Ask who reviews your work and what happens when a task exceeds your experience. Find out how much time is available for learning and mentoring.

Request an example of someone who developed from a similar starting point. Check whether the firm supports both specialist and management paths.

Working conditions

Ask about travel, location, time zones, on-call duties, and weekend releases. Check how frequently these occurred in a recent month.

For partner roles, ask about billable-time targets and time between projects. For client roles, ask about the plan after go-live.

For vendor roles, ask about product releases and urgent customer support. For managed services, ask about customer workload and escalation cover.

Delivery quality

Ask how the team records decisions, tests changes, and stops a release when necessary. Request an example of a lesson from a recent problem.

Find out who owns documentation and handover. Ask how the team prevents important knowledge from resting with one person.

Compare offers

Write each answer down while it is fresh. Mark any uncertain detail and request a written answer before relying on it.

Compare pay alongside duties, support, travel, benefits, and working hours. Give each factor a weight based on your own needs.
