Partner, software vendor, or client: where should you work?

The three main environments

An implementation partner helps customers introduce or improve D365. An independent software vendor, or ISV, builds a reusable software product.

A client-side team works inside a business that uses D365. It may run an implementation, manage suppliers, or maintain the system after go-live.

Some employers do all three kinds of work. Ask about the specific team and assignment.

Implementation partners

Partners bring together consultants, developers, architects, project staff, and commercial teams. Work often follows customer project needs.

You may see several industries or processes. You may also face changing assignments, billable-time targets, travel, or pressure around go-live.

Possible routes include senior consulting, specialist work, architecture, presales, project leadership, and practice management. Ask how the firm supports each route.

Software vendors

ISVs build products for needs that extend beyond one customer. Teams may include engineering, product management, support, consulting, customer success, and channel sales.

You can follow a product through many releases and learn from recurring customer problems. You also need to consider compatibility and long-term maintenance.

Progression may lead to engineering leadership, product leadership, industry specialism, or commercial roles. Check whether the job focuses on product work or customer implementations.

Client-side teams

During implementation, client staff define needs, make business decisions, prepare data, test, and support change. They hold knowledge the partner cannot supply alone.

After go-live, work can shift towards support, releases, reporting, access, and continuous improvement. A project-funded position may change or end after launch.

Career options include systems analysis, application ownership, product ownership, service leadership, and Head of Business Applications. Ask about the funded plan beyond implementation.

Other places to work

Managed service providers support systems over time. Work can combine incidents, planned changes, upgrades, and service reviews across customers.

Microsoft offers roles in product engineering, customer work, support, sales, and partner teams. Requirements vary widely by role and location.

Specialist data, testing, change, training, and integration firms also work on D365 projects. Recruitment and marketing businesses support the wider market.

Contract and independent work

Contracting is a working arrangement. A contractor can work for a partner, an ISV, a managed service provider, or a client.

Independent consultants must also define services, find work, manage delivery commitments, and plan for time between projects. Local legal and tax arrangements need qualified advice.

Compare the actual scope, support, and terms of an engagement. A higher day rate does not directly equal a higher employee salary.

• What would I work on during my first three months?
• Who reviews my work and helps when I get stuck?
• How much travel, on-call work, and out-of-hours change is expected?
• How do people progress as specialists and as managers?
• What happens to this role after the current project or release?
