Define a service you can deliver

Start with a clear problem and outcome. Examples include a defined support review, a migration workstream, or a specific product implementation area.

State the scope, required access, deliverables, assumptions, and exclusions. A client needs to understand what they are buying and what they must provide.

Use work you have already delivered successfully as the base. Independence adds business responsibility alongside delivery.

Check delivery readiness

You need evidence that you can plan work, handle issues, communicate progress, and complete a useful handover. References require the person's permission.

Know when you need a partner or specialist. Avoid accepting sole responsibility for work outside your experience.

Build a clear process for change requests. Scope and timing can shift during a project, and both sides need a record of the agreement.

Find and assess work

Opportunities may come through partners, recruiters, direct clients, or professional contacts. Choose channels that fit your service and experience.

Ask about budget ownership, decision-makers, access, project health, and payment process. A vague brief needs clarification before you commit.

A profile can describe your skills and availability. Do not publish customer names or private project details without permission.

Plan the business side

Estimate time for finding work, administration, learning, leave, and gaps between projects. A day rate cannot be compared directly with an employee's annual salary.

Contracts, insurance, tax, and employment status depend on your location and arrangement. Get qualified local advice before signing an engagement.

Keep current official guidance as the starting point for those checks. This resource covers career preparation and does not replace that advice.

Independent training

Teaching can form a separate service if you can explain tasks clearly and build useful exercises. Define the audience, access needs, learning outcomes, and support period.

Keep materials current and respect rights in course content. Agree permission before using any customer-specific examples.

Decide the next step

If delivery evidence is thin, seek a supervised assignment first. If delivery is strong but commercial planning is new, test a small defined service.

Review the whole arrangement before accepting work. Pay, scope, support, and working conditions all affect whether an engagement fits.
