What MB-500 covers

MB-500 is the developer exam for the finance and operations apps in Dynamics 365, the products built on the old AX code base. Microsoft writes it for developers who implement and extend those apps with standard coding patterns, extensible features and external integrations. In practice that means writing business logic in X++, building and changing reports and workspaces, customizing forms, exposing endpoints and APIs for Power Platform and outside systems, testing, tuning performance and moving code through application lifecycle management.

Microsoft expects candidates to have used a long list of tools: Visual Studio, Azure, Power Platform, Azure DevOps with TFVC and Git, Lifecycle Services, Power Platform admin center, the Implementation portal, Copilot, Postman, SSRS, Power BI and SQL Server Management Studio. If you have not touched most of those on a real project, you will feel it in the questions.

Skills measured and weightings

The current skills outline took effect on January 30, 2026. It has seven areas: plan the architecture and solution design (5 to 10%), apply developer tools (5 to 10%), design and develop AOT elements (15 to 20%), develop and test code (20 to 25%), implement reporting (10 to 15%), integrate and manage data solutions (15 to 20%), and implement security and optimize performance (10 to 15%).

The 2026 update raised the share for developing and testing code and cut the share for developer tools. Microsoft flagged major changes to ALM, the data model and data management. The ALM section now includes managing Unified Developer Experience (UDE) environments in Power Platform admin center and using the Implementation portal, so older study notes built only around Lifecycle Services will leave gaps.

X++ and the extension model

The largest block of the exam is code. You need the structured basics of X++, create, read, update and delete operations, global functions and clearing best practice warnings. Then comes object-oriented work: variable scope, inheritance and abstraction, query objects with QueryBuilder, attribute classes, Chain of Command, event handler classes and delegates, and judging whether a change will break other code.

Extensions run through the rest of the outline. You create extension models in Visual Studio and extend forms, menus, tables, views, queries, maps, data entities and classes. Framework items include SysOperation, workflow and SysExtensionSerializer, and testing means SysTest unit tests run in Test Explorer. Security and performance cover duties, roles, privileges, Extensible Data Security policies, caching, set-based queries, indexes and Trace Parser.

Cost, booking and pay context

Microsoft says associate exams typically cost US$165, priced in local currency by country, with tax added in some places. You book MB-500 through Pearson VUE. It is offered in English and Japanese. If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours, and later retakes have longer waits. Microsoft advises booking with a personal Microsoft account, because records tied to a work account are lost if you leave that employer.

For pay context, UK adverts on IT Jobs Watch for the Dynamics 365 Developer job title, in the 6 months to 5 Nov 2026, show a median permanent salary of £62,500 and a median contract rate of £463 a day. These are advertised figures, not earnings, and they are not tied to holding MB-500.

Questions people ask

Is MB-500 still a live exam in 2026?

Yes. The certification page was updated on January 30, 2026, and the exam can still be booked through Pearson VUE. A new skills outline applies from that date.

How many exams do I need for the Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate?

Only one, MB-500. Pass it with a score of 700 or more and you earn Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365: Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate.

Does MB-500 count toward the AB-100 architect certification?

Yes. Microsoft has said you need at least one active associate certification from its list of AI business solutions certifications, and the Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate (earned by passing MB-500) has been on that list. You still have to pass the AB-100 exam itself.

How do I renew MB-500?

The certification lasts 12 months. You renew it free by passing a short, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn during the six-month window before it expires, and you can retry the assessment until you pass.

Is MB-500 the same as the Business Central developer exam?

No. MB-500 covers finance and operations apps and X++. Business Central development uses a separate exam, MB-820, for the Business Central Developer Associate.

Do I need to know Power Platform for MB-500?

Some. The integration section covers dual-write, virtual entities, business events and connecting Power Platform to finance and operations apps. Expect questions on those, though X++ and AOT work carry more weight.
