What is Business Central, and who buys it?
Microsoft Learn describes Business Central as a business management solution for small and mid-sized organizations. It covers finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, projects, fixed assets, manufacturing, service and warehousing. Microsoft says most standard processes are built in, mainly for wholesale and professional services, and that it also supports assembly, manufacturing and directed warehouse management. Your clients are usually companies that have outgrown an entry-level accounting package and want one system for their books, stock and orders. Projects are smaller than enterprise ERP work, so you will see more clients a year and wear more hats on each one.
What does the consultant actually do on a project?
You start with scoping. You sit with the finance lead and operations staff, map how they post invoices, pay vendors, track stock and close the month, then decide what standard setup covers and what needs an extension. Then you build. That means creating the company with Assisted Setup, filling configuration worksheets and packages, setting up the chart of accounts, posting groups, dimensions, number series, payment terms, currencies and bank accounts.
Data migration is a large share of the work. You load customers, vendors, items and opening balances, then reconcile them with the client's accountant. You also set up users, permission sets and security filters, configure approval workflows and report layouts, and train key users. At go-live you run the first postings with the client, fix setup gaps and hand over to support. The current MB-800 outline also expects you to enable Copilot and the built-in agents, so expect clients to ask about them.
How does it differ from Finance and Operations work?
Microsoft positions Business Central for small and mid-sized organizations, and it certifies Business Central separately from Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management. Business Central has its own functional exam (MB-800) and developer exam (MB-820). Finance has MB-310, and Finance and Operations developers take MB-500. In practice, a Business Central consultant usually covers the whole system for a client, from the general ledger to inventory and purchasing. On Finance and Operations projects, consultants tend to specialize in one area inside a larger team. If you came from Dynamics NAV, read our guide on moving from AX or NAV to Dynamics 365.
Where are the jobs?
Most of the work is delivered as projects, so you will choose between joining an implementation firm, where you move from client to client, and working in-house for one business that runs Business Central. Partner roles build breadth fast and involve many go-lives. In-house roles go deeper on one company's processes and usually involve less travel and fewer deadlines. Our guide on partner versus end user covers that choice in detail. On this site, US adverts for Business Central roles that state pay are still few, so treat the pay figures below as a rough guide.
Pay
USD a year, before tax. D365 Market advertised pay from US adverts that state pay, snapshot 2026-11-05. This is a small sample of 9 adverts from 8 employers. It shows advertised pay, not earnings, and leans toward states with pay transparency laws. Seniority, location and partner versus in-house employment move the figure. Refer to the Business Central salary guide for figures from live adverts.

- Security and workflow setupExpect to create users, profiles, permission sets and security filters, and to set up approval workflows and notifications.

Questions people ask
Which certification should a Business Central consultant take?
MB-800, which leads to the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant Associate certification. It tests four areas: set up Business Central, configure financials, configure sales and purchasing, and perform Business Central operations.
How long is the MB-800 exam, and what if I fail?
The certification page gives 100 minutes to complete the exam, and the exam is proctored. If you fail, you can retake it 24 hours after your first attempt. Waiting periods for later retakes vary under Microsoft's retake policy.
Does the MB-800 certification expire?
Yes. Its renewal frequency is 12 months. You renew at no cost by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Is Business Central the same as Dynamics 365 Finance?
No. Microsoft describes Business Central as a solution for small and mid-sized organizations. Dynamics 365 Finance is a separate product with its own exam, MB-310. Business Central consultants usually configure the whole system for a client instead of one module.
Do I need to code?
Not for the functional role. You configure the system and extend it by installing extensions. Custom development is a separate developer track with its own exam, MB-820.
What does a Business Central consultant earn in the US?
US adverts on D365 Market that stated pay showed a median of $105,000 a year as of 2026-11-05. That figure comes from a small sample of 9 adverts and is advertised pay, not earnings.
