What you already bring

Accounting work can build knowledge of journals, approvals, reporting, reconciliation, and financial controls. Those skills help a project team understand what a system must do.

Write down the processes you know well. Separate direct responsibility from tasks you have only observed.

Roles to explore

Finance functional consulting can suit people who want to configure and improve finance processes. Business Central consulting may involve a wider range of business tasks.

Finance systems analyst and application support roles can offer a bridge into system work. A super user assignment within your current employer can also help.

Read the duties and product names. Finance and Business Central are different products, and experience in one does not automatically cover the other.

What you need to learn

Learn the target product's terms, configuration, data, and testing approach. Practise turning a business need into a clear requirement and expected result.

You will also need workshop skills and change records. A consultant must explain choices to people with different needs and levels of product knowledge.

Keep accounting advice within your qualifications and role. Product configuration still needs review by the business owners responsible for the process.

Your first assignment

Ask to help with a finance-system improvement, a test cycle, or a reconciliation issue. Choose one process with a clear owner.

Follow the work from problem to result. Record the requirements, the checks, and what changed after feedback.

If workplace access is unavailable, use invented data for a process map and test plan. Label it as a practice example.

Applying for work

Describe finance experience in terms of business processes and controls. Add your product learning and practice evidence as separate items.

Ask employers about supervision, the first module assignment, and access to training environments. Avoid roles that expect sole ownership before you have delivery experience.
