What does the role involve?
A Business Central functional consultant sets up business processes and helps people use them. Work can cover finance, purchasing, sales, stock, and other areas used by the customer.
You might help a wholesaler control how it buys and receives stock. You would map the process, agree the setup, test transactions, and prepare the people who will use it. You also check the effect on accounts and reporting.
Business Central is a separate product from Dynamics 365 Finance. Confirm which product a course or job uses.
What the week can involve
- Run a workshop with accounts, sales, or operations staff.
- Set up company details, posting rules, approvals, or stock processes.
- Check imported master data and opening balances.
- Test a complete purchase or sales process with users.
- Explain a change and help the team resolve a support issue.
Skills and qualifications
Accounting and business-process knowledge can provide a useful base. You need to understand how a transaction moves through the system and how to check its results. Clear writing and patient user support matter.
Learn the standard product before planning extensions. You may work with an AL developer when a requirement needs custom code. Agree who owns the business decision, the technical design, and the test result.
Microsoft offers a Business Central functional consultant learning route. Use the current official page to check the topics and assessment. Employers set their own requirements for degrees and professional qualifications.
How to get started
Accounting, finance systems, operations, and NAV experience can help you enter the field. Look for junior consulting, support, super-user, or testing work where you can learn under review.
Start with one complete process. Purchase-to-pay is a useful example because it links a supplier, order, receipt, invoice, and payment. Explain the checks at each stage and what happens when the documents disagree.
If you cannot access a training environment, start with the process map and test plan. Check trial and course access before spending money.
Different workplaces
A partner consultant may work across several customers and industries. An ISV role may focus on a specific extension, such as a warehouse or finance product. A client role may cover internal support and ongoing improvements.
Ask how many modules the role covers and who provides specialist help. Some teams expect broad knowledge from a small number of staff. Others separate finance, operations, technical, and support duties.
Where the career can lead
Routes include senior consultant, finance or operations lead, solution architect, product specialist, and application owner. You can also move into presales, training, or a consulting team lead role.
Build evidence of whole-process delivery. Show how you gathered requirements, made setup choices, checked postings, trained users, and handled a problem after launch.
Practice task
Use a fictional wholesaler buying and selling spare parts. Describe how it orders stock, receives a partial delivery, and handles a supplier invoice.

Prepare for an interview
Be ready to trace a transaction and explain how you would find an incorrect result. Use a real or clearly labelled practice example.
Ask about the first customer or process you would work on. Check the balance of implementation, support, travel, and training time.
