What does a Finance consultant do?
A Finance consultant sets up and improves the processes a finance team uses in Dynamics 365 Finance. Areas can include the general ledger, supplier payments, customer accounts, budgeting, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
For example, a business may need to shorten its month-end close. You would learn how it records transactions, checks balances, and approves adjustments. You would agree changes with finance owners and test the accounting results.
You need to understand both the process and the reason for its controls.
What the week can involve
- Discuss posting, reporting, and approval needs with finance staff.
- Set up accounts, dimensions, workflows, or a finance feature.
- Check imported balances and investigate differences.
- Test a transaction from its source through to the ledger.
- Help users prepare for month-end tasks or a system change.
Skills and qualifications
Accounting knowledge helps you understand postings, reconciliations, controls, and reporting. Clear explanations matter when finance staff and developers discuss the same issue in different terms.
A finance qualification can support your background, but employers set their own requirements. Some roles accept strong process experience from operational finance work. You also need practical product knowledge and testing skills.
Microsoft's Finance consultant learning route covers key finance features. Check the official qualification page for its current scope and exam details.
How to get started
An accountant, finance analyst, accounts-payable specialist, or finance super user can begin by helping with testing and process changes. Ask to trace a transaction and compare the system result with the expected accounting treatment.
Keep a record of the issue, checks, and outcome. Build a fictional practice case if you cannot share workplace examples. Do not use real supplier, bank, tax, or employee data in a public portfolio.
Different workplaces
A partner consultant may design and configure finance processes for several customers. An ISV role may focus on a specialist finance product and its fit with the core system.
A client-side role can involve ongoing finance systems support, controls, releases, and improvement work. Ask whether the team expects you to own system setup, accounting policy, or both. Those decisions need clear business ownership.
Where the career can lead
You can become a finance workstream lead, principal consultant, or solution architect. Other routes include finance systems ownership, product management, reporting, and controls specialisms.
To progress, build evidence across the whole process. Show that you can lead discovery, explain setup decisions, reconcile data, support users, and respond to an exception.
Practice task
Use a fictional business buying equipment from a supplier. Describe the purchase, approval, invoice, payment, and reporting steps. State the assumptions behind the accounting treatment.

Prepare for an interview
Expect questions about financial dimensions, posting results, data migration, and month-end problems. Start with the business process, then explain the checks you would use.
Ask which finance areas you would own, who approves accounting decisions, and how the team handles close-period support. Check the level of implementation experience expected.
