What does a Power Platform developer do?
A Power Platform developer builds applications and automated processes using tools such as Power Apps, Power Automate, and Dataverse. Some roles also involve custom code, APIs, or Copilot Studio.
You might build an app for staff to request equipment. The app records the request, applies access rules, sends approval work, and tracks the result. You need to test what happens when an approver is away or a connected service fails.
Good development includes support, permissions, and updates from the start.
What the week can involve
- Agree a business need and choose a suitable app or flow design.
- Create tables, forms, views, and access roles.
- Build a flow with checks for errors and repeated requests.
- Test a change and move it between environments.
- Review usage, logs, and support feedback after release.
Skills to build
Learn the difference between canvas apps and model-driven apps. Understand how Dataverse stores records and applies access rules. Practise writing clear formulas and working with APIs.
Application lifecycle management means controlling how changes move from development through testing into production. Learn solutions, environment settings, source control where appropriate, and a repeatable release process.
Some jobs need C#, JavaScript, or custom connectors. Others focus mainly on low-code work. Ask which skills you will use and how much custom development the team expects.
Learning and qualifications
Microsoft Learn has product training and a Power Platform developer qualification. Check the current exam page and match its topics to your target role.
PL-100, PL-200, and PL-600 have retired. Older articles and job adverts may still name them. Use the current Microsoft pages before choosing an assessment.
The Developer Plan can provide a development environment with access conditions. It requires a suitable work or school account and tenant settings. Check the rules before planning an exercise or course.
How to enter the field
Business users who already build spreadsheets or simple flows can develop useful process knowledge. Software developers bring testing, design, and debugging skills. Each starting point has gaps to fill.
Start with a small app used by a fictional team. Define who can see and change records. Add a clear owner and error handling to each flow. Ask someone else to test the app using your instructions.
Different workplaces
A partner role may involve apps for several customers. A client team may build and govern a growing set of internal apps. An ISV may use Power Platform as part of a supported product.
Ask how the team manages environments, data policies, licenses, and app ownership. Find out what happens when an app's original maker leaves. These questions reveal how the team supports its work over time.
Where the career can lead
Routes include senior developer, technical lead, consultant, platform architect, and governance specialist. Copilot Studio is another area to explore when the work calls for agents.
Build judgement about tool choice. Explain when a process needs an app, a flow, a product feature, or custom development. Include cost, access, support, and reliability in the decision.
Practice task
Build an equipment-request app for a fictional organisation. A requester can see their requests, and an approver can act on requests assigned to them. Use test data throughout.

Prepare for an interview
Be ready to explain a failed flow, a permission problem, and a release you tested. Show how you found the cause and checked the fix.
Ask about app ownership, code review, testing, and who decides whether a new app is needed. Check the role's balance of building and support.
