What does a Dynamics 365 test analyst do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 test analyst plans and runs the testing that gets an ERP or CRM system to go-live and keeps it working afterward. That means user acceptance testing, process testing, and regression testing after each Microsoft update: two release waves a year for Customer Engagement, and two to four service updates for finance and operations apps.

What does the job look like on a project?

On an implementation, you turn business processes and requirements into test cases, line up realistic data, and run the test cycles. In Microsoft's Success by Design framework, functional testing starts in the Implement phase. Each test case should link back to a process flow, and the test data should look like the customer's real data. Microsoft's testing checklist suggests considering automation for functional, process, end-to-end, performance and regression testing, because automated tests can be rerun faster and more accurately.

Process testing comes next. It runs from Implement into Prepare and checks role-based security, so each user can do their own tasks in production and nothing more. It also covers negative testing, where you go looking for errors and outcomes nobody expected. User acceptance testing happens in the Prepare phase, before cutover, and go-live depends on it. Business users do the UAT, and they need training on the new processes first. Much of your week goes into coaching those users and sorting defects into a backlog.

Why regression testing never stops

Microsoft regression tests its own code. Your customer's data, configuration and extensions are unique, though, so the customer has to run regression tests in its own environment after every update. On customer engagement apps and Power Platform, updates come as two release waves each year. Wave 1 covers April through September and wave 2 covers October through March. Early access lets you check an update in a sandbox before it reaches production.

Finance and operations apps work on a different schedule. Microsoft ships service updates in February, April, July and October. A customer must take at least two a year and can take up to four. Only one update in a row can be paused. The sandbox gets the update seven days before production does, and that week is your regression window. A test analyst with a reliable automated suite turns this from a scramble into a routine.

Which test tools does Microsoft document?

For finance and operations apps, the Regression Suite Automation Tool (RSAT) turns Task recorder recordings into automated tests without code. It runs through Azure DevOps and keeps test parameters in Excel files. Microsoft has marked RSAT for deprecation and will stop supporting it after May 15, 2027. If you are learning tools now, do not build your skills around RSAT alone.

Microsoft's regression testing guidance lists EasyRepro, a UI testing library for Dynamics 365 Online version 9.0 or 9.2, and Playwright, a cross-browser web testing framework. It also lists paid tools such as Tricentis Tosca and Leapwork, and Microsoft says it does not recommend one tool over another. Microsoft deprecated Power Apps Test Engine in April 2026 and points people to its Power Platform Playwright samples instead. These are TypeScript tests for canvas, model-driven and AI-generated apps, and they run in Azure Pipelines or GitHub Actions.

What separates a good Dynamics test analyst

General testing skills get you in the door. Knowing the business process is what keeps you employed. On Finance, you need to know a posted invoice from a pending one and know what a correct ledger entry looks like. On Sales or Customer Service, you need to know how a case or opportunity moves through its stages and who is allowed to touch it at each step. Testers who can read the process, write clear defects and script a little automation get moved onto the next project. Testers who only click through scripts tend to get dropped at the end of UAT.

USD a year, before tax. These figures come from BLS OEWS May 2025 national data for Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers (15-1253), adjusted to 2026 with the Employment Cost Index. That occupation is the nearest match and includes testers outside Dynamics, so this is not a Dynamics 365 figure. D365 Market has no advertised pay row for test analysts yet.

What you need

  • Test planningYou write test plans, test cases and defect reports that link back to business processes and requirements. You also run test cycles on a schedule.
  • Business process knowledgeYou understand the processes you test, such as order to cash on finance and operations apps or case handling in Customer Service. That lets you judge whether a result is correct.
  • Security and negative testingYou can check role-based security for each user role and test for errors and outcomes nobody expected, as well as the happy path.
  • Automation basicsExpect to work with RSAT and Azure DevOps on finance and operations projects, and with Playwright or EasyRepro on model-driven apps. TypeScript helps with Microsoft's Playwright samples.
  • Update awarenessYou track release plans and the service update calendar so regression testing happens in the sandbox before an update reaches production.
  • Working with business usersYou prepare and support the business users who run UAT, and they need training before they start.

How to get there

  1. Months 0-6Learn testing fundamentalsLearn test case design, defect logging and test management in Azure DevOps. Many people start in general software QA or as business users on a UAT team.
  2. Months 3-12Learn one Dynamics 365 productPick finance and operations apps or Customer Engagement and learn its core processes well enough to know what a correct result looks like.
  3. Year 1-2Run UAT on a live projectJoin an implementation as a tester. Write the scripts, support business users through UAT, and triage defects up to go-live.
  4. Year 2-3Build a regression suiteAutomate key business processes so each release wave or service update can be checked in the sandbox. Shift toward Playwright and supported tools as RSAT approaches its end of support.
  5. Year 3+Lead testingOwn the test strategy across phases as a test lead or manager. Some people move into business analysis or functional consulting instead.

Questions people ask

Is RSAT still worth learning?

Microsoft has marked the Regression Suite Automation Tool for deprecation and will not support it after May 15, 2027. You may still meet it on finance and operations projects until then. Put your longer-term effort into tools that will outlast it, such as Playwright.

How often do Dynamics 365 testers run regression tests?

Customer engagement apps and Power Platform get two major release waves a year, with general availability in April and October. Finance and operations apps get service updates in February, April, July and October, and customers must take at least two a year. Each update you take needs a regression pass in the sandbox.

What replaced Power Apps Test Engine?

Microsoft deprecated Test Engine in April 2026 and no longer maintains it. In its place, Microsoft points to the Power Platform Playwright samples, an open-source TypeScript framework for testing canvas, model-driven and AI-generated apps.

Who does user acceptance testing on a Dynamics 365 project?

Business users run UAT, after they have been trained on the new system and processes. The test analyst plans it, writes or reviews the scripts, supports the users and manages the defects. UAT takes place in the Prepare phase, and go-live depends on it.

Does Microsoft recommend a specific test automation tool?

No. Microsoft's guidance lists free and paid options, including RSAT, EasyRepro, Playwright, Selenium and Tricentis Tosca, and says to choose based on your solution, budget and goals. Weigh setup effort, how hard tests are to maintain, and the support on offer.
