What does a Dynamics 365 support consultant do?

Short answer

A Dynamics 365 support consultant keeps a live system running after go-live. You work a ticket queue against service levels, fix configuration and data problems, raise Microsoft support cases when the platform fails, and test each Microsoft update in a sandbox before it reaches production.

What does a support consultant do day to day?

You start the day in a ticket queue. Users report that a workflow stopped, a report shows the wrong totals, a security role blocks a screen, or an integration left records half posted. You reproduce the problem in a test environment, find the cause, fix it or hand it to a developer, and write up what you did. Most tickets are configuration, data or how-to questions. A smaller share are real product faults, and those go to Microsoft.

Every ticket carries a priority and a response target agreed with the client. You learn to triage fast: what is broken, how many users it stops, and whether a workaround exists. That habit of separating a production outage from a training gap is the core skill of the job, and it carries straight into consulting.

How do Microsoft support cases work?

When the fault sits in the platform, you open a case in the Power Platform admin center. Microsoft requires an active support plan to create a request, and the person filing needs one of the listed admin roles, such as Power Platform Admin, Environment Admin, Helpdesk Admin or Partner Delegated Admin. An AI support agent first offers self-help answers, then creates the request if they do not resolve it.

Microsoft sets its first response by severity and plan. Severity A, critical business impact, gets a response in under one hour on every plan, but you commit to working the issue around the clock with Microsoft. Severity C, minor impact, gets under eight hours on the standard plan. Microsoft may downgrade the severity of cases involving customized processes or code, and caps break-fix help on problems it cannot reproduce at about four hours.

Why is update testing part of the job?

Dynamics 365 runs on one version for every customer, so updates arrive on Microsoft's schedule. Sales, Customer Service and the Power Platform get two major releases a year, in April and October. Admins can switch a sandbox to the monthly release channel to see features early, then check key scenarios, customizations and training material before the change reaches users.

Finance and operations apps work differently. Customers must take at least two and up to four service updates a year, delivered in February, April, July and October, and can pause one consecutive update. Support teams usually own the regression test on the user acceptance testing sandbox, and they report problems they find to Microsoft.

How do you move from support into consulting?

Support is one of the most common ways into Dynamics 365 work because it teaches the product as people really use it. After a few hundred tickets you know where configurations break, how data flows between modules, and what users misunderstand. That is exactly what a functional consultant needs in requirements workshops.

To make the move, ask for small change requests alongside tickets: a new field, a revised workflow, a security role redesign. Take the associate exam for the app you support. Then volunteer for update testing and any new rollout phase at your client, since project experience is what consulting hiring managers look for first.

What you need

  • Working product knowledgeYou need to navigate the app you support, read its configuration, and reproduce a user's problem in a sandbox. Most people learn this on the job in the first six months.
  • PL-900 Power Platform FundamentalsA beginner exam with 45 minutes to answer, covering environments, Power Apps, Power Automate and Copilot Studio agents. Microsoft says it is not a prerequisite for any role-based certification.
  • Associate exam for your appFor Customer Service support, MB-230 tests case management, routing, queues and service-level agreements. Finance support teams look to MB-310, and Business Central teams to MB-800.
  • Ticket disciplineYou must log clear steps to reproduce, set priority honestly, and write fixes others can follow. Clients judge support teams on response times and repeat incidents.
  • Admin access for Microsoft casesFiling a Microsoft support request needs one of the admin roles Microsoft lists and an active support plan on the tenant.

Questions people ask

Is Dynamics 365 support a good way to start a career?

Yes. Support teaches the product through real faults and real users, which is hard to get any other way. Many functional consultants started on a support desk at a Microsoft partner or an end user.

Do I need a certification to get a support job?

No law or Microsoft rule requires one. PL-900 shows you know the platform basics and takes 45 minutes to sit. An associate exam such as MB-230 helps when you want to move into consulting.

Who can open a support case with Microsoft?

Someone with one of the admin roles Microsoft lists, such as Power Platform Admin or Helpdesk Admin, on a tenant with an active support plan. You open the request from the Support area of the Power Platform admin center.

How fast does Microsoft respond to a support case?

It depends on severity and plan. Severity A gets a first response in under one hour on all plans, Severity B in under four hours on the standard plan, and Severity C in under eight hours on the standard plan.

What is the difference between support and administration?

An administrator owns environments, licenses, security and settings. A support consultant fixes what users report and investigates faults. In smaller teams one person often does both.

How much does a Dynamics 365 support consultant earn?

D365 Market has no advert data for support roles yet. As a generic comparison, BLS puts the 2026-adjusted median for computer user support specialists at $63,800 and for computer systems analysts at $109,150, and neither figure is Dynamics-specific.
