What does a technical consultant do?

A technical consultant helps a team work out how to build and run a change in Dynamics 365. The work can include integrations, data migration, extensions, environments, and difficult support issues.

You may speak with a business user about a missing order, trace it through several systems, and help the team agree a fix. You need to explain both the technical cause and the effect on the business.

The title varies between employers. Some technical consultants spend most of their time coding. Others focus on design, configuration, or troubleshooting.

What the week can involve

  • Review a requirement and check the technical options.
  • Investigate an interface or data problem across systems.
  • Build or review an extension, script, or integration.
  • Plan a deployment and check environment settings.
  • Document how support staff can diagnose and recover a fault.

Choose a technical area

Business Central, Finance and Operations, and Dataverse have different development tools. Learn one product's supported extension methods and data model. Add the surrounding tools as your work needs them.

For integration work, learn APIs, authentication, message handling, logging, and retries. For migration, learn data mapping, validation, repeatable loads, and reconciliation. Both routes need careful testing.

Skills and qualifications

You need logical troubleshooting, clear communication, and an understanding of how business data moves. Learn source control and how the team moves changes through test environments.

Coding requirements depend on the product and role. Ask about AL, X++, C#, JavaScript, SQL, and low-code tools individually. Avoid claiming equal depth in tools you have only seen briefly.

A current product or developer qualification can help guide learning. Check official exam details. Employers also need evidence that you can deliver and support a change.

How to get started

Development, application support, system administration, and data work can all provide a base. Choose a small technical problem and follow it from the business need through to a checked result.

A useful first assignment is a supervised interface change or data import. Record the requirements, test data, error handling, and support notes. Explain which parts you owned and which needed specialist help.

Different workplaces

Partner roles may involve technical work across several customers. ISV roles can include product integrations, release compatibility, and customer implementation support. Client roles may centre on the organisation's interfaces and systems.

Ask whether the team expects project delivery, support cover, or both. Find out who owns technical decisions and how much review support you will receive.

Where the career can lead

You can progress into senior technical consulting, integration leadership, technical architecture, or engineering. Some people specialise in migration, performance, security, or release management.

To move towards architecture, build evidence across several connected areas. Show how a change affects data, access, operations, and support. Explain the options you rejected and the reasons for your chosen approach.

Practice task

Plan a connection between a fictional order system and a warehouse service. An approved order must arrive once, with the right items and delivery details. The design must cope with a temporary outage.

Prepare for an interview

Expect a troubleshooting scenario with incomplete information. Ask about the symptoms, recent changes, affected records, and logs. Explain how you would narrow the cause without putting production data at risk.

Ask which product stack the role uses, how releases work, and who handles support outside normal hours. Check the balance of hands-on build and advice.
