What the role covers

A security and governance specialist helps define and check controls around D365 use. Work can include access roles, data policies, approvals, and review evidence.

Responsibilities vary by product and employer. Some roles sit in IT security; others sit within the business applications team.

Typical assignments

• Map job duties to the access people need.
• Review conflicting permissions with control owners.
• Test what a user can view, create, change, and approve.
• Document policy exceptions and their review dates.
• Prepare evidence for access and control reviews.

Skills to build

Learn the security model of the target product. Understand how permissions combine and how connected services affect data access.

You need business process knowledge to judge whether access fits a person's duties. Work with finance, privacy, and security experts where their approval is required.

Clear evidence helps reviewers understand the result. Record who tested a control, what they checked, and what remains unresolved.

How to enter

Administration, audit support, IT security, finance controls, and application support can provide a base. Start with a supervised access review.

Practise in a safe environment using invented users. Never change live privileges just to learn how a feature works.

Current product learning supports the technical work. Broader security learning can help with risk, but it does not replace product-specific experience.

Workplaces and progression

Client teams need ongoing access and policy ownership. Partners may design roles and controls during implementation. Managed services may carry out approved routine reviews.

Progression can lead to security architecture, platform governance, control leadership, or a Centre of Excellence role.

Wider roles require judgement about exceptions, ownership, and support costs. Build experience of working with several teams and explaining the reason for a control.

Use a fictional purchase process where one person requests an order and another approves it.

Interview questions

Ask who owns access decisions and who approves exceptions. Find out how often controls are reviewed and how changes reach connected systems.

Prepare an example of a control that blocked valid work. Explain how you would investigate it without quietly removing the protection.
