What does a Sales consultant do?
A Dynamics 365 Sales consultant helps a business manage its sales process in the application. You agree how people record leads, develop opportunities, plan activities, and hand work to other teams.
A team may have many open opportunities with unclear next steps. You would learn how sellers work, agree useful stages and records, and test the process with users. You would also consider which reports help managers make decisions.
What the week can involve
- Talk with sales staff and managers about the current process.
- Set up forms, views, sales records, and business rules.
- Check customer data and access permissions.
- Test lead and opportunity handling with sample users.
- Help the team use the system and review feedback.
Skills and entry routes
Sales operations, CRM administration, customer service, and business analysis can provide useful experience. You need to understand how a sales team works without assuming every business sells in the same way.
Learn the Sales application, relevant Dataverse concepts, and the team's release process. Reporting and Power Automate skills can help where the work needs them.
A first assignment could involve improving data quality, writing test cases, or helping users follow an agreed process. Keep the problem and result clear in your notes.
Qualifications and learning
Use Microsoft's current product learning and certification catalogue. MB-210 and MB-280 are retired, so older job adverts may name exams you can no longer take.
Learn to demonstrate a useful process before collecting course badges. Show the setup, access rules, user tasks, and checks. Employers may also ask for a degree or experience in a particular industry.
Different workplaces
Partner work can include discovery, implementation, and user training across customers. A client role may focus on sales operations and ongoing improvements. An ISV role may support a specialist application or add-on.
Ask how much the role involves product setup, sales-process advice, data cleanup, and support. Find out who can approve changes to the sales process.
Where the career can lead
Routes include senior consultant, CRM product owner, solution architect, sales operations systems lead, and presales consultant. Broader CE work can add Customer Service or Field Service experience.
Build evidence that people use the process successfully. A working form is one part of the result. Data quality, clear ownership, and useful reporting also matter.
Practice task
Design a lead-to-opportunity process for a fictional business selling maintenance contracts. Define what makes a lead ready for a salesperson and how follow-up work gets assigned.

Prepare for an interview
Expect questions about low adoption, poor data, and requests for too many required fields. Explain how you would learn about the cause and test an improvement.
Ask which sales processes the employer uses and whether the role includes technical development or ongoing administration.
