Practice leadership
A practice lead helps a consulting team deliver good work and grow its skills. The role may cover hiring, coaching, staffing, quality, and commercial results.
A small partner may combine this with sales and project delivery. A larger firm may split those duties across several managers.
Head of Business Applications
A Head of Business Applications usually oversees a company's application services and change plans. Work can include budgets, suppliers, teams, risk, and investment priorities.
The role needs a view beyond the current implementation. Systems need support, upgrades, data ownership, and people who understand how the business uses them.
Programme and transformation leadership
A programme manager coordinates related projects and the outcomes they must deliver. A transformation lead may also own wider changes to processes and working practices.
These roles need clear decision-making across teams. Completing project tasks does not by itself show that a business outcome has improved.
Skills to develop
- Coach people and give clear, useful feedback.
- Understand budgets, capacity, and delivery commitments.
- Address quality problems before they spread.
- Make priorities and decision rights visible.
- Review outcomes and explain changes in direction.
Moving into leadership
Senior consultants, delivery managers, architects, and application owners can build towards these roles. Start with a defined leadership responsibility.
Lead a hiring panel, mentor a small team, or own a quarterly improvement plan. Ask for feedback from the people affected by your decisions.
Do not assume technical seniority provides management skills. Learn how the employer handles performance, wellbeing, conflict, and staff development.
Choosing an employer
Ask how much authority matches the title. Responsibility for a team without control over staffing or priorities can make delivery difficult.
Check the balance between billable work, people management, and sales targets. Ask how success is measured and where the role gets support.
Practice task
Use a fictional team with three projects and limited capacity. Include a junior colleague who needs supervision.

Longer-term choices
Routes can lead to consulting director, technology leadership, operations leadership, or a specialist advisory role. The right choice depends on the work you want to own.
Remaining a senior specialist is also a valid path. Compare your preferred daily tasks before choosing a management title.
