What an ISV product manager does
An independent software vendor, or ISV, makes a product that customers can use alongside D365. A product manager helps decide its direction.
They study customer needs, agree priorities, and work with engineering, support, sales, and partners. The role includes choices about what the product will not cover.
Typical responsibilities
- Gather evidence from customers, support issues, and sales discussions.
- Define the problem a proposed feature must solve.
- Compare demand, effort, risk, and maintenance cost.
- Prepare releases with engineering and customer-facing teams.
- Check whether a released feature gets used and helps customers.
How this differs from a project role
A client project can accept a change for one organisation. A product manager must consider several customers and future versions.
A custom feature may create ongoing support costs. Ask whether it belongs in the shared product, a separate extension, or customer-specific work.
You also need to plan documentation, migration, and support. The responsibility continues after the release date.
Skills and entry routes
Consulting, business analysis, customer success, and software development can lead into product work. Industry knowledge can help you recognise recurring needs.
Build evidence of prioritisation and follow-through. Show how you gathered input, chose a direction, and checked the result after delivery.
Learn the product's technical boundaries and commercial model. You need enough detail to discuss trade-offs with specialists without pretending to own every decision.
Progression
Possible routes include senior product management, product leadership, or a broader business role. Some people remain close to one industry and become deep product specialists.
Leadership adds portfolio choices, coaching, and investment decisions. Look for chances to plan across several releases and coordinate shared dependencies.

Interview questions
Ask how much time product staff spend with customers. Find out who makes final priority decisions and how custom work affects the roadmap.
Prepare a case where a requested feature was only one possible answer. Explain how you tested the need before choosing a solution.
