What does a D365 developer do?

A developer builds software that extends or connects a Dynamics 365 system. You turn an agreed requirement into code, test it, and help the team run it safely. The work also includes finding faults and improving existing software.

For example, a business may need to pass approved orders to a delivery service. You would agree the data format, build the connection, and handle failed or repeated messages. You would also explain how support staff can find and recover a failed order.

Choose the right development route

Business Central uses AL for its extensions. Finance and Operations work includes X++. Customer Engagement and Dataverse work can include C# plugins, JavaScript, web APIs, and Power Platform tools.

These products have different models and release processes. Choose a route before choosing a training course. A strong start in one stack gives you a base for learning another later.

Ask which part of the system you would change in a job. A generic developer title can include integrations, reports, support, or application development.

What the week can involve

  • Review a requirement and ask about cases it does not cover.
  • Write an extension, plugin, integration, or report.
  • Add tests and check another developer's code.
  • Investigate a fault using logs and a repeatable test.
  • Prepare a release and document how to support the change.

Skills and qualifications

Learn source control, debugging, automated testing, data modelling, and API design. You need to understand the product's access controls and supported ways to extend it. Clear notes and useful code reviews also matter.

Some employers ask for a degree. Others focus on the work you can demonstrate and the experience behind it. Read each advert and show evidence that matches its duties.

A current Microsoft developer qualification can guide study. Check the official exam page before booking. Certification does not replace the need to build and explain a working example.

How to get started

If you already write .NET or JavaScript, explore Dataverse development. If your background is NAV, AL may be a natural next area. AX experience can help with an X++ route. Each move still needs product-specific study.

Choose a small problem that you can complete. Keep the code in source control, write a clear setup guide, and add tests for failure cases. A reviewer should be able to understand the goal and run the example.

The Power Apps Developer Plan can support suitable Power Platform exercises. It has account and tenant rules. It does not provide free access to every D365 application.

Partners, vendors, and client teams

A partner developer may build changes for several customers. An ISV developer works on a product that must behave well across customer setups and releases. A client developer may focus on a particular business system and its interfaces.

Ask about code review, testing, deployment, and support cover. Find out how the team handles urgent fixes and older custom code. These working practices can shape your learning as much as the technology.

Where the career can lead

Routes include senior developer, technical lead, integration specialist, technical architect, and engineering manager. You can also move towards product engineering or build expertise in testing and release automation.

To progress, take responsibility for reliability as well as delivery. Show how your design deals with failed messages, invalid data, access limits, and changes over time.

Practice task

Build a small extension or integration in your chosen product. Use fictional records and a simple business rule. Add a failure path so the exercise shows how you handle errors.

Prepare for an interview

Be ready to explain your code and its trade-offs. Describe a fault you found, how you narrowed it down, and how you stopped it returning. Make clear which parts you built yourself.

Ask which development stack the team uses, how releases reach production, and who reviews code. Check whether the role includes out-of-hours support.
