What migration work means
A data migration specialist helps a business move records from an old system into D365. The work starts well before the final load.
You agree which records to move, clean the source data, map fields, run trial loads, and prove that the result meets agreed rules.
Main responsibilities
- Find the owners of source data and target records.
- Document field mappings, defaults, and rejected records.
- Plan the order in which related records must load.
- Reconcile counts, balances, and sample business transactions.
- Rehearse the final move and agree a stop decision.
Skills to develop
SQL, spreadsheets, data tools, and product import methods can all help. The right tool depends on the product, volume, and project rules.
Business knowledge matters when records are incomplete or inconsistent. A technical load can succeed while producing unusable business data.
You need patient investigation and clear evidence. Keep a record of decisions so another person can repeat the work.
Starting routes
Data analysis, application support, finance operations, and database work can lead here. Start by owning a small data set with an experienced reviewer.
Ask for work on cleansing rules, mapping, or reconciliation. These tasks teach the discipline needed before leading a whole migration.
Confirm access to the correct D365 product before planning a practice import. Use invented records and approved tools.
Working environments
Partners often plan and run migrations during implementation. Client staff supply business knowledge and approve the data.
Some specialists join projects for a defined migration period. Check what work follows go-live and whether travel or late cutover hours apply.
Career progression
Senior specialists lead several data areas, manage trial cycles, and coordinate business approval. Further routes include data leadership, integration, and technical architecture.
A strong migration lead can explain when the data is ready and when a project needs more time. That judgement needs evidence from repeated trials.
Practice task
Use a fictional customer file with deliberate duplicates, missing fields, and invalid values. Keep both the original and cleaned versions.

Interview preparation
Bring a small reconciliation example. Explain what you would do if totals matched but sample records were wrong.
Ask who signs off each data set, how many rehearsals are planned, and whether the source data owners have time assigned.
