What does the role involve?

A Customer Service consultant helps a business manage customer requests in Dynamics 365. Work can include cases, queues, routing, service targets, and knowledge used by service staff.

You might help a team whose requests move between departments without a clear owner. You would map the process, agree how work gets assigned, and test what happens when the first team cannot resolve it.

What the week can involve

  • Discuss customer requests with service agents and team leads.
  • Configure case records, views, queues, and relevant service features.
  • Check access to customer information and internal notes.
  • Test assignment, escalation, and closure rules.
  • Review user feedback and improve guidance for common tasks.

Skills and entry routes

Customer service, contact-centre operations, support, and business analysis provide useful process knowledge. Learn to follow a request from arrival to resolution and check where it waits or loses information.

Build knowledge of the Customer Service application, Dataverse, security, and testing. The role may also involve Power Automate, reporting, or integrations. Ask which technical skills are required.

Junior consulting, CRM support, testing, and super-user work can provide an entry point. A useful first project is a small change to case data or a handover process.

Learning and qualifications

Use the current Microsoft learning pages for the application. Check the status of any qualification before booking training or an exam.

Build examples that show both routine work and exceptions. A service process must cope with missing information, repeated requests, wrong assignments, and urgent cases.

Different workplaces

A partner consultant may configure service processes for several customers. A client team can follow service performance and user adoption over time. An ISV role may focus on a specialist service product.

Ask whether the job includes contact-centre tools, integrations, support cover, or custom development. Clarify who owns service policies and who approves changes.

Where the career can lead

Routes include senior service consultant, functional lead, CRM product owner, service systems manager, and solution architect. You can also develop a specialism in knowledge, customer operations, or adoption.

To progress, show how a change improved an agreed service outcome. Explain the starting problem, the change, the checks, and what the team learned after release.

Practice task

Create a case-handling process for a fictional home-appliance business. Requests arrive with different products and levels of urgency. Some need a visit from a field engineer.

Prepare for an interview

Expect questions about service targets, routing, data quality, and agents who avoid using the system. Start with the people and process before proposing settings.

Ask how the team measures service quality and how agents take part in testing changes.
