Two areas of work

Customer Insights – Data brings customer data together for analysis and use. Customer Insights – Journeys supports customer communications and journeys.

Employers may group both under one title. Read the duties carefully. Data matching and marketing operations need different strengths.

Working with Data

A data specialist studies source records, customer identity, data quality, and useful groups of customers. They agree what each field means.

They test whether records belong to the same person or business. A bad match can affect reporting and communications.

Useful skills include data analysis, careful testing, and explaining uncertain results. Work with privacy and security specialists when data use needs review.

Working with Journeys

A Journeys specialist helps teams plan messages, triggers, audiences, and follow-up actions. They test entry rules and check what happens when a person leaves a journey.

The work includes consent handling, content approval, and measures that matter to the business. Message delivery alone does not show business value.

Marketing operations, CRM administration, and campaign analysis can provide a useful starting point.

Daily responsibilities

  • Agree the business question and the data needed to answer it.
  • Document source fields and rules for data quality.
  • Test audience membership and exclusions with sample records.
  • Review a customer journey with marketing and service teams.
  • Record ownership for errors, approvals, and future changes.

How to build experience

Choose one area first. A data analyst could start with record quality and matching. A marketer could start with journey design and testing.

Use invented contacts in practice work. Avoid copying customer records into a personal environment. Confirm access and product limits before building a demo.

Check the current Microsoft product documentation. Older marketing courses may cover features or interfaces that have changed.

Employers and progression

Partners need people who can explain customer needs and deliver working systems. Client teams need ongoing ownership of data and marketing operations.

Software vendors may offer related data services or industry products. Ask which product skills the job actually uses.

Possible routes include data leadership, marketing operations management, solution design, or a customer-platform product owner role.

Interview preparation

Bring a simple data dictionary and a journey diagram. Explain one case where you would stop a release because the data was unreliable.

Ask who owns customer data, who approves communications, and how the team measures the result of its work.
