What does a CE consultant do?

Customer Engagement, often shortened to CE, is a common term in job adverts for work around Dynamics 365 customer-facing applications. A role may focus on Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, or related Power Platform work.

You help a business decide how it records customer information, assigns work, follows up, and measures service. You then configure the agreed process and test it with users.

Ask which applications the role covers. A sales pipeline and a field-service schedule need different business knowledge.

Sales, service, and field work

Sales work can include leads, opportunities, activities, and the handover of agreed business. Customer Service work can include cases, queues, routing, knowledge, and service targets.

Field Service work can include work orders, resources, scheduling, mobile tasks, and customer assets. These areas may connect, but they have different users and constraints.

Start with one process and learn its data and decisions. Broader product knowledge can follow as your work requires it.

What the week can involve

  • Discuss how a sales or service team handles a customer request.
  • Set up forms, views, business rules, or a product feature.
  • Check who can access customer records and change them.
  • Test a workflow and its handover between teams.
  • Help users understand a new process and gather feedback.

Skills and qualifications

Learn the chosen D365 application and the parts of Dataverse it uses. Understand records, relationships, access roles, and how changes move between environments. Power Automate and reporting skills can help in many roles.

Sales operations, customer service, and CRM administration provide useful business experience. You need to ask clear questions and turn the answers into a testable process.

MB-210, MB-280, PL-200, and other older credentials have retired. Check Microsoft's current learning and exam pages before planning study. Match your learning to the actual application in the job.

How to get started

Look for CRM analyst, application support, junior consultant, or super-user work. Help a team improve one process, such as recording a service request or handing a qualified lead to a salesperson.

Write down the starting problem and the result you want. Use a suitable test environment to build a small example. Explain permissions and test cases alongside the screens.

Different workplaces

At a partner, you may gather requirements and configure customer projects. At an ISV, you may support a product built on Dataverse or a D365 application. A client role may focus on user adoption and a long-term backlog of changes.

Ask whether the role includes custom development, marketing work, contact-centre operations, or field scheduling. Confirm the boundaries before judging your fit.

Where the career can lead

Routes include senior consultant, functional lead, product owner, solution architect, and presales consultant. You can also specialise in service processes, customer data, adoption, or a particular industry.

A useful next step is to own a complete process across teams. Show that you can handle a handover, an exception, and the measures used after launch.

Practice task

Design a customer-service process for a fictional equipment supplier. A customer reports a fault, a service agent checks the details, and the team decides the next action.

Prepare for an interview

Expect questions about user adoption, data quality, access, and process design. Explain how you would find the cause of a problem before changing the system.

Ask which product the team uses, who owns the customer process, and how users take part in testing. Find out how much support work the role includes.
