Choose the work before the title
Career growth can mean deeper expertise, a different product, a new workplace, or wider leadership. It does not have to mean managing people.
Write down the tasks you want more of and the tasks you want less of. Compare roles using those lists.
Four directions to explore
- Deepen your specialism through harder problems, mentoring, and design review.
- Broaden your role through analysis, product ownership, or cross-team delivery.
- Change your environment by moving between a partner, vendor, and client team.
- Lead people, services, or investment when those responsibilities interest you.
Find the missing evidence
Compare two current job descriptions for your target role. Separate duties you have done from duties you have only observed.
Choose one gap you can address in your current work. Ask for a defined assignment with an owner, a review point, and support.
A developer moving towards architecture might own an integration design. A consultant moving towards product ownership might follow one improvement through adoption and review.
Make lateral moves useful
A sideways title change can add product, industry, or operating experience. Judge the assignment and support, not only the title.
Agree what you expect to learn and how long you will review the move before deciding the next step. Keep the plan flexible.
Record responsibility and results
Keep a private record of decisions, feedback, and outcomes. Write what you personally owned and where another person held final responsibility.
Use approved summaries in applications. Avoid claims such as leading a whole programme when you owned one workstream.
Have a specific development conversation
Ask your manager for one assignment that builds the missing evidence. Explain how it helps the team and what support you need.
If the current employer cannot offer the work, compare external roles using the same evidence checklist. A new title alone may repeat the same tasks.
