What administrators do
An administrator looks after the day-to-day running of an application or platform. Duties depend on the D365 product and the size of the team.
A small team may combine administration with support and reporting. A larger organisation may separate access, environments, releases, and service monitoring.
Daily responsibilities
- Handle approved access requests and remove access when required.
- Check environment health and investigate alerts.
- Plan routine work with support and delivery teams.
- Keep records of changes, owners, and support contacts.
- Test recovery procedures with the people responsible for them.
Skills to build
Learn the administration tools for the product you support. Understand environment purpose, permissions, capacity, updates, and the boundaries of your access.
Careful records matter as much as speed. A small access change can affect many people. Follow the approval process and check the result.
Practise explaining a technical issue to a business user. Give a clear next step and a realistic update time.
Entry routes
IT support, service desk work, CRM administration, and super user experience can transfer well. Seek a role with clear escalation support.
Ask to observe access reviews or a release rehearsal. Keep a learning log of the checks and decisions, without copying private system details.
Training can help you understand the tools. Check the current product guidance and practise in an approved non-production environment.
Employers and working hours
A client administrator may support one organisation over several years. A managed service role may cover several customer environments.
Ask about on-call work, weekend changes, team cover, and the number of systems per person. These details affect the working week.
Progression
Possible next steps include senior administrator, platform owner, service lead, security specialist, or release engineer. Each route adds different responsibilities.
A Power Platform Centre of Excellence lead may combine governance, standards, learning, and investment planning. Build experience across these areas before seeking that role.
Practice task
Use a fictional business with a test and production environment. Create documents without needing access to a live tenant.

Interview questions
Ask who approves privileged access and who covers absence. Find out whether the role has time for prevention as well as incident work.
Prepare to explain how you would check a change and record what happened if it failed.
