How do you become a Dynamics 365 solution architect?

Short answer

Most people get there after 8 to 10 or more years as a lead functional consultant or senior developer, with design work across several modules, integrations and Azure. Microsoft retired MB-700 and PL-600 on June 30, 2026. The architect certification now is AB-100, which also requires one listed associate certification.

Where do solution architects come from?

Almost nobody is hired straight into this job. The usual route runs through a lead functional consultant role in Finance, Supply Chain Management or the Customer Engagement apps, or through a senior developer role on X++ or the Power Platform. Either way, you need several full implementations behind you, from the first workshop through go-live and the support period after it. Architects are trusted because they have seen projects fail and can tell you why.

Functional leads tend to bring process depth and good client skills, and they need to add integration, data and security design. Senior developers usually have the technical depth already. Their gap is running workshops, defending design choices in front of finance directors, and knowing why a process works the way it does. Plan to close whichever gap is yours on purpose, ideally on a live project.

What breadth do you need?

An architect owns decisions that cut across the whole solution. You should know at least two modules well enough to configure them, plus how they connect. That means Dataverse and the Power Platform, dual-write and integration patterns, Azure services such as Logic Apps, Service Bus and Functions, the data and reporting layer, environment and ALM strategy, licensing, and security roles. You will not build all of it yourself. You do need to know when a requirement belongs in standard configuration, in an extension, or in a separate Azure service.

Copilot and agents now sit in that list too. Microsoft's AB-100 page describes the target candidate as someone with broad knowledge of core Dynamics 365 products, Power Platform, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry, and who designs multi-agent solutions, works with MCP and Agent2Agent protocols, and can run an ROI analysis. That tells you where Microsoft expects the role to go.

What changed with certification in 2026?

Microsoft retired three architect-level certifications on June 30, 2026: Finance and Operations Apps Solution Architect Expert (MB-700), Power Platform Solution Architect Expert (PL-600) and Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert (MB-335). The MB-700 and PL-600 pages say you can no longer earn or renew them after that date. For a while that left Dynamics architects with no product-specific expert credential.

The replacement is the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert. You pass exam AB-100 and also hold at least one associate certification from Microsoft's list. That list includes MB-310, MB-330, MB-500, MB-800, MB-820, MB-230, AB-210, AB-250, AB-620, AB-410, AI-103, AI-300 and the Power Platform Developer Associate. The AB-100 page still shows PL-400 for that last one, but the developer certification page says PL-400 is moving to AB-400 and that AB-400 registration opened on October 16, 2026.

How much weight do employers put on the certificate?

Less than on your project record. Hiring managers ask which implementations you designed, how many users and legal entities they had, what you integrated, and what went wrong. A certificate shows you know the product and the vocabulary. It does not show you can hold a design authority meeting together. Still, partners count certifications for their Microsoft partner status, so an associate certification plus AB-100 helps you get past screening, especially at partners.
